Nation-wide climate strike by students

In his movie Gore predicted that sea levels could rise six meters (20 feet) with the melting of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets.

Gore also claimed in his 2006 film that by 2016, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa would be snow-free and that weather would worsen, with stronger, more frequent hurricanes. Yet these, among other predictions, never happened.

National Geographic Peak Oil in 2006

Another scare-and-hide prediction came from Rajendra Pachauri. While head of a United Nations climate panel, he pleaded that without drastic action before 2012, it would be too late to save the planet. In the same year, Peter Wadhams, professor of ocean physics at the University of Cambridge, predicted “global disaster” from the demise of Arctic sea ice in four years. He too, has gone quiet.

Are the protestors asking you to listen to scientists or to political figures?

The rate of changes in surface temps, ocean temps, and ice melt have surpassed the “middle case” of scientific climate models; what is being observed is on the worst case side of model uncertainty.

It is time for radical change, but old farts who don’t care what happens after they die seem to think fossil fuel subsidy is a great idea. :facepalm

I am glad that some youth are engaged in this. :thumbup

Every generation hands off the world to the next.

Boomers got the industrial revolution handed off by the Silent generation who got it handed to them by the G.I generation.

Blaming just the boomers... is lame. Hell we have two from the Silent generation running for President. Seems to me plenty of that generation and the one before has had its hands on how we treat the earth and how we got here.

Green Peace founders - Silent Generation
The Conservancy Association (China) Founder - Silent Generation

I am sure reading through the list many other environmental agencies were started by Boomers. And for sure for years it was Boomers that did the leg work for them.

"All boomers bad.. can't wait until they die off". :twofinger

Lame generalization in my opinion. There are good and bad in every generation. Selfish and sharing.

Protest solves nothing, changes nothing, and goes nowhere. Please spare me any example from 50 years ago back when people cared about street protests and marches.

You want to tell me how many of these dumb ass kids are registered to vote, understand civics, read laws thoroughly before they vote on them, and actually go to the polls on election days, now that is interesting.

:rolleyes
Spoken like a non-participant, eh? Say, 30 years actually..

Pretty much most of the world agrees that USA be the precise place for a protest, demonstration, free assembly. Anyone who's seen Easy Rider though, knows you need a permit from The Man.

Never let scientific illiteracy get in the way of parroting fossil fuel lobby talking points.

I'm with the children. Can we stop listening to dipshits who think pumping chemicals into the Earth to extract petroleum is any kind of solution?

Seems like an excellent learning opportunity for students to nurture critical thinking skills, and social engagement.

Seems like an opportunity for some adults to do the same, but they've managed to resist thus far.

Ugh didn't like a middle school girl already do this like 5 years ago.....

Y'all hella late imo

This drifts int a chicken vs egg argument. Do we have low voter turn out because people think it is pointless or is it pointless because so few people turn out? Are you in favor of making voting easier? Make it a holiday, do it on a weekend, more early voting, more efficient registration process etc.?

Registration is already wildly easy. Half the U.S. States already offer paid time for staff to vote. Polling stations stay open late enough for people working normal human hours to vote. Most States have easy access to Absentee Ballots so you don't even have to go to the polls and can mail it in well in advance of the election.

All any of this shit requires is someone to actually give a shit in advance of election day, and be willing to think about what steps they have to take to participate. I am not even really interested in the votes of people who cannot summon that much interest and commitment in their community.

So you're able to see the future then? Because the way it works is that they do a little dance and then we hand over the keys along with the ability to have any say in at least 99% of legislation.

What you said does not seem to have anything to do with what I said, and you seem to be having your own conversation without me. I am not sure how to respond to that.

:rolleyes

Pardon me, I am speaking specifically about the United States. In the USA, Causeheads have defaulted the value of that medium to nonsense.

Yes, but to quote my old sparring partner, Dimitri, "People are shit". Encouraging a change in perspective among young people, almost definately has a better return on investment, than targeting older people who are more likely to be set in their ways.

Im in agreement with those who dont see the value of all this. I find that kids have been pushed into adulthood at the time when kid stuff should be the focus. Go to school, ride your bike, do stupid shit with your friends out in the woods, ache for some hot girl that ignores you...:laughing

Instead kids seem to be pushed toward activism, told that their world has been ruined, that there will be nothing left because some unknown greedy/stupid people did bad things intentionally or apathetically. You better be mad Little Jimmy, or you're not paying attention! Dont do kid stuff, be woke and have your mom/dads opinion on adult issues when you're 10...:rolleyes

What we end up with are a bunch of unnecessarily paniced, scared, CHILDREN who might think theres no hope and contemplate shooting up the school in a childish last act of defiance. Or a bunch of overly sensetive weaklings who think that someone elses opinion makes them evil if its not in lock step with the current thought fad.

Then theres the idea that adult activists are using "the children" to shut down opposition to whatever their adult cause is. "What? You dont care about the children as much as i do??? You monster! I'll see to it that you lose you job..."

Glad to see this happening.

I hate school closures that support one political cause's demonstrations.

This is a good thing.

Kids are aware that their future environment is getting fucked up.

Speak up now or inherit a shitty situation.

They're speaking up. Now they shouldn't have to do this, but they're fully aware that industry's have bought the governments and are selling out their future.
