NC23 (re)build thread

Huzzah!

☑️ running
[ ] rideable
[ ] roadworthy

I recall you basically having all the parts you need to get it rideable, no? You mentioned a petcock last night; is there anything else?

I need to do an inventory of all the hardware that I have, I think I'm missing a lot of things like the bolts that hold the velocity stack plate to the carbs (and the airbox to that plate). Also I need a chain.

The distance between Rideable and Roadworthy is probably smaller than the distance between Running and Rideable… but both should be smaller than the distance from "pickup truck full of parts" to "Running" :)

great news!
keep moving forward.
been subscribed all this time and seeing the fruits of your labor is just awesome.
Congrats on clearing the obstacle.:thumbup

Sounds sweet! Your efforts are inspiring me to pick up my project ASAP.

Can anyone tell me what 12 and 13 are in this fiche image?

cmsnl's page is missing both but I have them in one of my bins and can't make heads or tails of their purpose…

From CMSNL: https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cbr400r...esticnc23-109_model17065/partslist/F18-1.html

12 looks to be a support structure for 13 the foam filter element. Both unavailable but seem easy enough to DIY.

12 - PIPE, AIR CLEANER CBR400RR 1989 (K) JAPANESE DOMESTIC / NC23-109. The 17243KY2710 Pipe, Air Cleaner is (temporarly) unavailable. 17243-KY2-710 is the manufacturer code. € 7.00
CMS Product Number: HO0026.3563

13 - CUSHION, AIR CLEAN CBR400RR 1989 (K) JAPANESE DOMESTIC / NC23-109. The 17244KY2710 Cushion, Air Clean is (temporarly) unavailable. 17244-KY2-710 is the manufacturercode. € 3.00

At this point in the build it's time to install a chain, which goes through the swingarm, but a MotorToad happened to it a while ago and the linkage and swingarm are forever attached to each other. Normally that would be fine, but the ride height is all wrong after changing the 18" NC23 rear wheel out for the 17" from an NC29.

GF makes a linkage that fixes this:

So now I need a new swingarm to go with my new linkage and shock (since the linkage *also* uses a different shock). Furthermore, the shock needs a different spring rate than stock. So let's start there:

The new swingarm is cleaner than the old one!

Hopefully the next shop day should see a motorcycle riding around the block under its own power!

Nice countershaft sprocket.

Thanks! It spins!

Also, I added more chain and now it goes!

Actually I've done a bunch of things since the last post but it takes a while to get photos and video onto my server, remember what I did, write it down, and all that :afm199

Anyway, thanks to BARFer Triple Threat for selling me the muffler, it's a beaut.

So now that it's running and rideable, it's time to work on making it roadworthy. Progress on that tonight included getting all the lights working, which was pretty easy since riding around the island fixed the taillights (somehow) so all that was left was the headlights.

Running lights work, high beams work, just the low beams were out. Filaments and wiring had continuity so that left the switchgear. Had it apart and figured out that the high beam switch wasn't making contact when set to Lo.

It lit up when I compressed the switch housing though, so in we go.

Took it apart, cleaned it up, and what do you think the odds are that I got all these tiny springs back into place without losing one?

Amazing even myself, I managed to get it all back together without losing anything. There wasn't even much cursing! I only had to take it back apart once!

By the end of the night, all the lights and switches work. Next up is probably replacing the petcock as it's weeping fuel from the valve and doesn't seem user-serviceable.

Oh, and also bodywork brackets. I have enough to fit the fairings, but there are a couple brackets that are either missing or buried in my pile of parts so they're not really ready to ride. That said, it's pretty amazing how complete everything was considering the photos back on page 1.

Glamour shot:

Luvin this! Congrats!

Just read this start to finished and wanted to say AWESOME!

Great photos and descriptions and props to your mechanical skills and dedication!

*sniff* Convincing you to buy this bike was one of the best choices I've ever made. I'm so proud. Of myself.

So last time we spoke things seemed pretty close to done. Except for the side to side swingarm play which O'Hanlon called "unsafe to ride" (I rode it home anyway), an oil leak, and some running oddness that seemed likely to be old leaky intake boots. Also I didn't have a kid yet. Now I do!

Finally got around to working on it again last month. Swingarm fixed, finally got some Chinese eBay intake boots to fit (ugghh), and fixed the "oil leak" which turned out to be a missing breather hose between the valve cover and the airbox. The hose didn't come with the bike so how was I supposed to know it was missing? :dunno

Anyway, I have no idea if the intake boots really helped because it smokes when it runs now. Smells like oil? I'm sure it has nothing to do with this. Oh and one of the forks is leaking. Sigh. At least Past Me thought of this and bought new seals what feels like a hundred years ago now.

I'd post some pictures but I don't have a great spot to upload images right now. Wish barf could host images for its posts :afm199

If you have a Google account upload the photos to your account, move them to a shared album and share the URL. :)
