I'm looking for a good gun which would be used with a CCW permit and thus the gun would be for defense. I'm looking for something small which I could put in a holster and carry around without it being bulky. There is so many and i've looked at quite a few, I like the XD sub-compact 3" but i'm looking for input.

I want it to have good stopping power, I'm mostly looking at 9MM but may be open to others.

Thanks

Maybe search the BARF Militia thread? There are a couple hundred of posts around this topic

Hate to break it to you, but obtaining a CCW in the Bay Area is next to impossible. Do you have connections with a Sheriff in a rural county willing to issue you one?

I'm moving out of state, where having a clean record and taking a class is all it takes :thumbup

S&W 442

About 16 oz unloaded, titanium.

Plus you can get a sweet pink laser grips.

So either a .40 or .45? I'm looking for a short barrel of course so that its as small as possible but isn't TOO small.

Good for you! I was wondering how you'd get a CCW too. So anyways, I'm partial to 1911's. They are perhaps the best carry weapon when it comes to comfort, as they are single stack and the slide/frame profile is pretty thin compared to the Glocks and XD's. If you were to go with a 1911, I would stay away from a 3" one, or any ultra compact one, as their reliability is shit. I'd go with a 4" barrel and up, and maybe even a 5" full size one if you get the right holster. Look into Milt Sparks, as they make arguably the best holsters in the world. It's all about the holster and the belt. Oh, and please don't be one of those gun nuts that feel the need to also carry extra mags, you have a better chance at winning the Lotto than getting into a gunfight where you'd run out of ammo. You shouldn't even the feel the need to look for gunfights, the purpose of carrying is simply to protect oneself, and long enough to wait for LE to show up. Good luck!

Yes, I do not plan to carry extra mags and i'm not looking for a gun fight. Sole purpose is for protection. I'd like to keep my record clean with no criminal history :thumbup

Truth be told, pulling out a weapon will probably stop 99 percent of any possible problems. And the chances of the 1 percent occuring are pretty tiny. I have lived in some pretty rough and scary places and never got into a situation where I needed a concealed weapon. That's not an argument against them, rather a comment that a 9mm is probably going to be more firepower than you need.

Looks about the right size actually, anyone else recommend this?

I may have spoke to soon. Looks like they stopped taking orders on this model due to backlog.

A few years back i was looking into buying the .32 but there was a 1-2 year waiting list. Seecamp is a very small company but makes a very quality product; it appears to have a cult following that snatches up all they make.

I didn't read the whole thread but it looks like it may also be due to lack of ammo for testing.:thumbdown

Two words (well, one word and one number): Glock 19. The compact 9mm Buy one used if you can find one. That SHOULD NOT be a problem. Buying a used Glock is like buying a used brick. They are a proven design and will last forever. Parts, should you need them are cheap and plentiful. They are a piece of cake to work on. And being 9mm, ammo will be more reasonable than .40 or .45. Good luck.

Whatever fits you well, is comfortable to shoot, and that you're willing to train with.

You just need to go to a range and rent a bunch of stuff. Then go to a store and handle a bunch more stuff.

As for caliber, I'm happy with .45ACP in a carry gun, but if you want something a little more than 9x19, and less than a .45, in a semi-auto, consider the .40S&W and .357SIG cartridges.

Good luck. There's hundreds to choose from, and you might want to wait to purchase until you leave CA, since those of us in free states get lots of models that are unavailable in CA.
