I just purchased a couple of 'nicer' DVD players last year at X-mas, now it looks like they may go the way of the BetaMax player!!! This ticks me off. I've acquired quite a few DVd's and I don't want to have to convert to another format. If 'm mistaken, please let me know-- since I'm a 'techno-retartd' Thanks, Lefty

Netflix picks Blu-ray, rattles HD DVD
Posted by Erica Ogg | 5 comments
If Warner Bros.' decision to go exclusively with Blu-ray Disc was an industry-rattling earthquake, Monday's news that Netflix would begin to phase out HD DVD rentals is an inevitable aftershock: much smaller impact, potentially damaging, and still leaves everyone feeling unsettled.

By the end of the year Netflix will no longer offer HD DVD movies to customers, opting to exclusively stock Blu-ray Discs in its online rental service. In the company's announcement, Netflix said it made the decision based on Blu-ray's recent momentum--Universal and Paramount are the only remaining major Hollywood studios with agreements to release titles exclusively on HD DVD.

For HD DVD backers like Toshiba, Microsoft, and the studios, Netflix is probably yet another sad loss, but it won't have the demoralizing repercussions the Warner decision did.

But for the average consumer, in reality, not much changes. That's because the overwhelming majority of DVD renters don't rent high-definition discs. In fact, most of Netflix's own customers don't rent high-def discs. But those who did were renting Blu-ray more than HD DVD, hence Netflix's decision.

Sure, Netflix is one less place to rent HD DVD, but finding copies of the beleaguered disc format is not impossible--Blockbuster stores don't offer HD DVDs to rent, but its online rental service still stocks both formats.

In all, the announcement doesn't do much to make the muddled format picture any less murky for consumers right now. High-definition video players and discs are still too pricey for most buyers, and the quality improvement over DVD isn't as apparent to anyone but the hardcore videophile crowd. Plus, standard DVD players that can convert discs to high-def resolution get the job done reasonably well. Until any of that changes, high-definition video will be stuck in neutral no matter which studio or rental service makes an offer of exclusivity.

Update: The HD DVD Promotional Group's response: "We have long held the belief that HD DVD is the best format for consumers based on quality and value, and with more than 1 million HD DVD players on the market, it's unfortunate to see Netflix make the decision to only stock Blu-ray titles going forward."

For further discussion, hear the guys at CNET's The 404 talk about it on Monday's podcast.

the word around the campfire, or so i've heard, is that the deciding factor will be the porn industry and what it decides to standardize on. for the life of me, i just can't recall where i got this information from. :dunno

Regular DVDs will be fine for a while. It's just these two new formats that are fighting it out right now.

WOOOHOOO! I just bought a Blu-Ray so guess I gambled right. Actually, I decided to go blu-ray after hearing about the porn industry....and I'm old enough to remember that the Beta Max war ended for the same reason :)

Which one did you buy?

That isn't surprising at all the porn industry will decide who wins the war...

On a barely related not; not too long ago I found out a girl I dated in junior high is in porn now :shocker

Which one did you buy?

Actually...I live in a small town where I can't even get NORMAL Blu-rays at the video store yet! :cry

Signing up for an internet blu-ray provider now though! :thumbup:teeth

the problem with the porn industry and this issue is that people dont buy porn anymore, they get it off the net, which wasnt around yet in the last great format war.:rolleyes

By phase out, does that mean they won't stock new titles? or the will be liquidating their current inventory? Because I just picked up an HDDVD player for my xbox on the cheap thinking I'd be renting from netflix. Imma be pissed if they don't carry any titles. :mad

Don't feel bad, Blockbuster doesn't even carry them yet!

I got the Sony S300.

It seems ok...just slow as hell to power up and get going. Just to eject a disc takes about 2 minutes. Hard for me to wait that long.... :teeth

you can brag about getting that ps3 but you should also know that it isnt even a full spec player as far as bluray goes, as soon as the ps3 gets the 2.0 firmware update and the ability to decode something beside 5.1 stereo it will be a great player, the problem is waiting to see if sony will do it and better yet why they would do it and shoot themselves in the foot for people wanting to upgrade to a better player, hell they already decided that you didnt want backwards compatibility for you. with out BC on the ps3 it's more of an interesting bookstop then anything else.

as far as netflix goes you could pretty much ask anyone who did rent hd dvd's from them and see how long they had to wait for a movie, there are reports of people waiting a month or longer for a movie over at the AVS forums, so it wasnt like people were happy with netflix hd dvd rentals anyways, hell there were over 20 posts last week about how much it sucked and it's been that way since the begining.

I myself have a pretty good collection of hd dvd's and some bluerays but i think it's pretty much come down to hd dvd going away, not that i want it to as i believe IMO that it is the better format of the two due to the enhanced features you get out of hd dvd. but as i said on another forum it's not like i wont be able to use my player down the line and having a collection of hd dvd's just means that when they stop making them ill have a good selection of movies that arent available to BD.

Sony can't do 1.1 on the S300, it doesn't have the secondary audio and video decoders that are specified. I just returned a 300 because of that. Store salesman stated it was only a firmware upgrade, but it's not.

The Panasonic DMP-BD30 will do 1.1, but 2.0 is out in a few months. If you're not looking at online features, 2.0 doesn't give you much over 1.1.

The Panasonic can be had for $449.00, ~$50.00 more than the Sony. Me, I took the Sony back and am waiting a couple months until that Panasonic can be had for $199. :laughing

you might be waiting for more then a couple months, if you had a monopoly on HD disc players would you lower or raise your prices?:wtf

During the Beta/VHS war, I went with Beta, which began to get phased out. The video store would get 40 copies of a particular movie on VHS, but only 15 on Beta. After a few more months, you could hardly find anything new on Beta, but you could still rent the older movies. After a few more months, some movies wouldn't be released on Beta at all. It took me another four years before I broke down and bought a VHS player.

I still have my Beta HiFi VCR, because I know Beta is coming back. :p

I loved my laser disc player, and to think i used to spend 70 bucks on a singlr movie:wtf
