New helmet time - question about new helmet tech

Well then if MIPS is so important why don't more, or all, helmets have this technology?

MIPS is pretty new technology. It is a response to the CTE studies that are on-going. The CTE studies show that minor head injuries and rotational head impacts can both be cumulative and are a lot more dangerous than were previously believed.

The helmet mfrs are just adding this tech to their helmets over the last few years.

MIPS and 6D's tech are patented and thus must be licensed and those commercial agreements have to be worked out before the tech can be added to their helmets

In the alternative, helmet mfrs must come up with their own tech.

I read one article that says Arai's approach is to make their helmets more rounded and slicker so that rotational impacts are lessened because the helmet will slip more on angular impacts.

If we are talking about Snell 2020 and rotational protection, more helmets aren how supporting it, like the new HJC i10 and i70 line.

Just checked the HJC website and they only list the i20 line as being Snell certified.

Odd, a Google web search shows plenty of articles about i10 being Snell 2020 and i70 is an i10 with a drop sun visor. Those are medium good, not the best (Arai et rest) but not crap at all. Fits my head really well so I've been using HJC for a long time.

My current helmet, HJC RPHA, has a couple of real annoying features I want to avoid in the future: "easily removable" cheek pads that won't stay in place and seem to come out way too easily, way too often, and the stupid face shield latch is in the middle of the face shield and when the shield is open about a 1/2", the way I often ride, the latch is annoyingly present in my field of view.

I normally buy HJC because their shape fit's my head, and their top of the line are fairly light. No help for a replacement, but the snaps coming loose on the cheek pads can be helped by a little dab of silicone seal on the snaps. Strong enough to hold, but can be pulled apart when necessary without damage to the snap. My problem is needing to try on any helmet before I buy, so ordering any new brand requires fitment and negates buyint online.

Having two HJC helmets (RPHA ST & RPHA 11) I didn't know this was a thing. I've never had any issues with the cheek pads coming loose or not staying in place. Count me lucky I guess. My only gripe is with the sliding visor lock, hate it when it gets tripped by my glove. I just wish they made a photochromatic shield. Sorry OP no help, and I can't say I've ever noticed the visor lock when it's up either, I prefer it in the middle so I can use either hand to open it when riding so I don't have to reach around.

i10 is Snell rated according to the HJC website.

I have never heard of a Snell rated helmet with a drop down visor. I read in an article sometime back that Snell regards a drop-down visor as a reduced safety factor because it remove some of the inner liner to make space for the drop down visor. Less I don't see the i70 As ever getting a Snell certification.

I took a close look at the i10 last night and basically it's the same as my CL17's that I used to wear except that it has the RPHA 11 type of face shield with the latch in the middle. Which is really annoying.

The i10 cheek pads and interior liner are removable and washable I didn't see anything in the HJC description that the i10 cheekpad was removable in the way that the cheek pads in the RPHA11 is EMS removal of the helmet.

i10 is different from CL17, new redesign, as part of that it's Snell 2020, with the exception of XXL sizes.

What I really wanted to know was what those that have them and have ridden with them for a while, if there was any difference in wear and tear or rattles or ???

I rotate between 3 helmets, a Shoei RF1200, a Bell Star MIPS, and an Arai Signet.

The Shoei is at 5 years, the Bell Star MIPS I got in Feb 2018, and the Arai Signet is new. I have a long oval head type.

The Bell is comfortable, it has done nothing to annoy me, I like the way the face shield opens, can crack it open a touch for venting, closes and locks easily, and I do like the magnetic strap holder. The vents pass more air than the Shoei, don't know yet re the Arai.

The Shoei is the quietest. It also fits just a touch tighter then the other two which may explain that. Dunno.. The Bell and Arai are about the same re wind noise. I do wear Howard Leight NR33 rated ear plugs.

I don't care for the closure / lock systems on either the Arai or the Shoei compared to the Bell. They work fine, but not as easy and convenient as the Bell.

All subjective, all reputable manufacturers, and God knows which would be better in a crash. I'll be working real hard to keep from knowing too.

Thanks Wwwoble. Good info.

I need to visit someplace that has a great selection of helmets.

Local stores here have a nice selection but they tend to have only a few brands so you need to drive around. Support the local bike stores rather than purchase online -- to keep them around.

I've been using a Bell Race Star Flex for the last 3 years with good success, but I have yet to have any impacts to really test the rotational tech. I will say that in my experience, most helmets that have rotational tech as an additional layer end up having larger exterior shells than some of their competition. You may get kind of an astronaut effect because of this. This can be seen with both the Bell Star and Race Star as well as the 6D ATS-1R.

It will be interesting to see what comes out over the next year as ECE 22.06 starts to be fully adopted over in Europe. That will then carry over to us as well. I think MIPS will be utilized more, but more factories will be coming up with their own integrated versions that change the construction of the EPS liners similarly to what AGV has done with their Pista GP RR that is FIM certified. Shoei already has their M.E.D.S. version on the VFX EVO. It's only a matter of time before we start seeing this in their street line-up.

Not surprising no one is really talking about Icons, but it seems like they've really upped their game lately and as a pure Shoei lover for 20 years with a few random forgettable Arais and HJCs thrown in the mix, I was actually considering trying an Icon. ECE, DOT, PSC rated

Shoei just announced the RF-1400.
Not available in yellow or orange. Forget it. :x

I don't see any bright colors available. I now that white shows up better than black, but it also tends to blend in with the background. And all of the multi-colored versions look bright up close, but are like camouflage from a distance.

Which Icon are you excited about? They've got some nice graphics, but I was under the impression that the quality isn't there.

I'm happy to see those prices on the new Shoei, although I'm not feeling any of the color schemes!

I'm was looking at the Airframe Pro based on a good friend's overall pleased experience with her fleet of Icon helmets, but now looking at the Airflites mostly because the Revzilla reviews on the Airframe say it's loud. That's been my a favorite characteristic with all my Shoeis--the quiet. I just have to decide if I can really handle being that much Iron Man, and actually, having just spent a while with the reviews, it seems most people only bought it for looks. . .aaaand I'm back on Shoeis. Dang it.

The RF1400 is a very definite possibility for me.

The colors are pretty "muted" but I can jazz them up with some reflective features.
