New hypermotard 796

offer a cheaper, less-intimidating alternative to the Hypermotard 1100.
is HM so powerful that it is intimidating? I thought it made about 90hp at over 400lbs.

No it's not, but it does have a ton of torque down low and an on/off throttle response that could easily catch a less experienced rider out. The smaller motor is much more user friendly. I think it will be a lot less fun though.

Ninja 250's can be fun. CBR 125's I'm sure can be fun, too. You don't need a ton of power to have a motorcycle that's fun.

A Ninja 250 is a real proper Motard , but seriously if you want some real respect in this section of the forum you need to kick some horse power to your tard , like an HD ultra glide , or a goldwing with slicks and lowered KLR suspension and without all the fairings and stuff :thumbup
:twofinger

( Since I'm all newbed and stuff how many years has the "that's not a motard" conversation going on ? just curious )

As for the Ducati , if they are going to cheapen out the suspension as well I wouldn't even buy it for a sports tourer. GO Orange !

Maybe Brok needs to open a new racing class? Sportards :nerd

The Aprilia Dorsoduro with 92hp at 8750 rpm 61 foot-pounds of torque at 4500 rpm- Yeah, you're right it's not a skank magnet like a Ducati.

I wouldn't even remotely consider the Hypermotard as anything close to a sport touring motorcycle. Of course, Kurt will wholeheartedly disagree with me. :laughing

Motard just means Biker.

Since Motard in french just means biker, and only came about when they took the American television series on ABC called Superbikers and translated it. Superbikers in french = Supermotard, and people started calling them Supermoto's especially when they started coming back over here with the negative connotation of 'tard.

So basically a hypermotard for a non english speaker just means hyperbike. Since most people think of Supermoto's as MX based offroaders adapted for street use the fact that the Hypermotard just looks like a streetbike based naked bike is why people get all bent about it I guess. When the name says it's just a hyperbike and implies nothing about offroad origins. Ducati doesn't make an offroad bike do they that this thing is based on right?

So just forget the fact it has the french word 'biker' in it and call it the nice naked bike that it is. Actually looks a lot like the KTM Superduke 990 with 2" more ground clearance and a smaller tank IMO.

Sure but you're talking about sportbikes, which the Hyper is not. The primary selling point of the Hyper is the way it blasts from corner to corner, lifting the front wheel at will. That manic torque is where the fun's at on this bike, not the twitchy, flighty feel of the bike in corners. Having owned the smaller Ducati motor, I know it's not going to offer that thrill so I think it's going to be a sheep in wolf's clothing, even more so than the big Hyper.

Maybe so. However I think the M696 is a blast when compared to the M1100. Sure it doesn't have the outright grunt that the 1100 does. But outside of that, it's certainly no slouch. And the best part is it makes equal power to my 12 year old M900. :|

I owned an S2R 800 (basically the same power/TQ as the 696) and if I had that motor in my Hyper, I wouldn't own it. Not enough punch to justify putting up with all the other trade offs you get with the Hyper. If Ducati does do a 696 version, they should call it the Zippymotard instead of the Hypermotard, as there's just nothing the least bit hyper about the smaller motor. That is unless they succeed in dropping 50lbs off the bike.

We should have guessed that the french were to blame for all this! :twofinger :rofl

I fail to see any negative connotation in the phrase Tard hovever :x

I guess I'd give it a chance if it's sub 320 pounds and has 65 + horespower and fully adjustable suspension ...

or I could just get a KTM, or better yet spend the money on learning to ride mine :)

How much weight will they shave just from using the smaller engine? :laughing
