NFL 2023

Meh, I'll go with it's on Shanahan... his late game fails in Super Bowls seem to be growing pattern.

That team just seemed too talented to not win that game. :dunno

I think that Wilks called a very good game, they were dominant in the first quarter against the best in the business. I think that they get a bit too conservative when they have a lead and have seen them allow teams to march down the field in the 4th quarter, I'd prefer that they just keep doing what worked.

For me, the turning point was when we lost the punt return. That was a fluke play, going off of the 49ers leg which forced the receiver to have to react to it. His blunder was to try to pick it up instead of just falling on it. That was a game changer.

FWIW, I am not calling for Wilkes head but predicting the reactions. But I do wonder why our defense seems more vulnerable despite adding talent (Young) this year. In this game, of course, losing Greenlaw and another DE to injury was an obvious issue.

I guess you could second guess rush four vs. blitz in line play in general, I dunno. I think blitzing Mahomes was too risky fwiw.

Agree that with Mahomes, a full blitz was not the best idea, especially since their linemen had been holding all game long and hadn't been called on it.

In a normal game, you either get the quarterback or get a lineman called for holding, giving you good odds.

Ya, because there was NO holding going on with the 9ers offensive line. :laughing

Look, I understand that nobody likes it when their favorite team looses, but I think the refs were probably instructed to NOT call the ticky tack small stuff, and let the players decide the outcome of the game.
I, for one am glad they did.

Well, now 9'ers fans feel like us Eagles fans...

I blame Mahomes for being so damn good. :x

:laughing

Once it went into overtime, the odd swung to KC big time. Mahomes and co. have so much experience in the SB, that became their trump card.

Dang Berto! You said Mahomes and Trump in the same sentence.
You better be careful or you might loose ANY friends that you have left.
Well, except me. :twofinger :laughing

Hahaha! Soon enough, John will be on the case Lonnie!

8 shot in KC celebration parade today. Gang related?

Wow, Knee Jerk and Stupid action, IMHO...

49ers' Kyle Shanahan decides to fire defensive coordinator Steve Wilks
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Wednesday on an impromptu conference call that he has fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

The 54-year-old coach’s tenure with the team has ended after one season. Wilks joined the Niners following the departure of former defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, whom the Houston Texans hired in the offseason to be the team’s new head coach.
Other teams are going to be very happy to find him available!

As I guessed, Wilkes is out. When you think back to getting him out of a booth and onto the field, it was a bit rocky this year. I definitely know I don’t know what goes on behind the scenes there, and either do the rest of us. Shanahan looked pretty mad during the game but he had multiple reasons. And our D had them locked down pretty good for most of it….until they didn’t. I guess one could surmise that despite their talent, they weren’t delivering the expected result too often or something. Like the first two halves of those playoff games where they fell behind.

There was a real sting with that final reception by the Chiefs. It felt inevitable but we just couldn’t stop it. Maybe that’s a factor.

Radio guys are kind of on a tear today that our offensive line failed repeatedly to either give Purdy enough time on his reads, or miss assignments, or commit penalties (really just those two big ones by Trent Green) so at least in that context, surprised by the firing.

Trent Green? I thought Purdy played every snap? ;)

Wilkes had to go. Obviously a rub between he and Shanahan. And earlier in the season, the players as well.

And the offensive line could have been better. And...

They lost a close game in the Super Bowl. Sheesh!

I 100% disagree. It was not a knee jerk decision. Shanahan screwed up hiring Wilkes, a good coach that had never run the system the Niners use. There is tape of him saying he is still learning the defense at week 5. Shanahan wanted to fire him long ago IMO. Shanahan had to call timeouts in the superbowl to stop Wilkes from doing bad things. The firing was warranted. The problem is Shanahan should have never hired him.

The Call that got Wilks Fired

x09JdhD.jpeg

With the 49ers just needing a turnover to win the game in OT. On a crucial 3rd and 6, Wilks decided to send an all out blitz with the corners playing man and lined up 10 yards off the receiver.

Pre-read it’s pretty obvious it’s a blitz. Mahomes knows where he wants to go with the ball if they come. The pressure does not mean anything as he just backs up like he’s playing madden and hits Rice on a mesh concept.

The blitz had zero chance of affecting this play and the corners had zero chance of covering anything underneath.

Had we played zone there’s a good chance our guys are able to pass off the mesh routes, especially if the 4 rushers generate pressure.

If you want to blitz here then draw up a zone blitz that still allows you to cover better than this. So disappoint that Wilks reverted back to the calls he got criticized for all year long.

Well, Shanahan isn't going to fire himself.

Shanahan has been the Coach for 7 years. The team he came on to was a 2 Win disgrace to Professional Football.

After 2 Rough Years righting the ship, he has been to the NFC Championship in 4 of the 5 years since.

That right there is a muthafucka that Niners fans need to all STFU and just believe in.

Amen. I posted something on the 24 thread but thought it was here. Furthermore to your thought, the defense has been a separate entity through most of those worst, confused years. They have been fierce, something to be proud of.

I always thought it would be hard to give your best when your offense is all over the map but its just professionalism and personal pride and the D has shown it over and over again.
