Oceano SRVA

I may have missed where somebody else said it, but make sure you have a reservation. Without it, you won't be allowed to camp.

I go there a lot with a 2 wheel drive tacoma pulling my 14ft toy hauler..
You can fill with water for free at the rv dump near the first ramp so no need to fill and tow the extra weight…Tide charts are online so try and arrive when its not high tide…Momentum is your friend on the sand..Keep rolling until you hit your spot…If you park parallel to the beach it is easier when you pull out…Bring a flat tip shovel and an air gauge….You will need both…Have fun and don't sweat it….a few cold beers will always suffice to find a bigger truck if you need a tug out…A tow strap is also handy if you need it but lots of wheelers will have one.Have fun!:teeth

thanks good tips. I also have reservations for three nights so we are good to go. I will make sure I bring a few extra beers for a tow.

Jelly of your trip, I'm getting round to selling my rig, gonna miss it.

I am sure you are an uber responsible barfer, so this is more of a general reminder that the rangers really are pretty tired of dealing with hurt people down there and take a dim view on kids without lids. Rightly so imho.

Enjoy your trip!

Any tips for responsibly drinking at Pismo without getting caught? How strictly enforced is the no alcohol rule?

I haven't been there in years, so I had no idea there even is such a rule. Is it just while riding/driving, or at all times?

Guess it's time for one of these:

Bottle Keeper

You can drink till you pass out at Pismo and nobody cares….What you can't do is drive after consuming alcohol…..( They will issue you a DUI on the sand)
a1scoot:ride p.s. That includes riding quads,,,dirt bikes….etc...

Thanks. That makes more sense.

Yeah 4th of july is gonna be a zoo down there. So they diverted the creek that's good to know? I've always been worried I'd have to do this crazy creek crossing to get to the OHV side.

Haha I rode down the beach at night during high tide on my DR650 cuz that's when I arrived and it was very challenging because there's not much of that hardpacked sand left. If you air down and like they said keep the momentum going and stay away from the really loose stuff you should be fine. I see civics and camrys driving down there.

The best camping spots are right down by the water when the tide is out....

I was there on the fourth a few years ago. A carnival indeed. I recall all towing needs being paid in six packs, or cases, of beer...

Er, it was a few years ago. I drove a '71 BMW2002 up the beach, and camped in a tent..

Been there many times and here are my tips (twice this year). You are in for a treat especially for the 4th of July weekend.

1. AIR down to 15psi on your vehicle and trailer if towing. Trailers drag and YOU will get stuck.

2. Bring an extra 4x4 if you have one otherwise have a buddy.

3. Shovel

4. Get there early as the line will be long

5. Park parallel with the ocean and bring cardboard to cover the bottom of your RV to block the wind

6. There is air pump station towards the main gate so you can air up when you leave. Bring cash its $1 per tire

7. When you drive in maintain your speed and stick close to the hard pack sand.

8. Lock your hubs

9. Stop if you start spinning so you don't dig yourself in deeper.

10. If you go past marker 6 the sand is softer and loose....YOU WILL GET STUCK no question about it.

11. Camp anywhere if you can find a spot.

Just got back from Pismo. Thanks for all the great tips they really worked. Airing down the tires, blocking the wind, taking a shovel.

We did not get stuck and thankfully the weather was perfect with little wind. This is really a great place to camp, even if you don't want to ride. We were literally a few feet away from the ocean and my daughter had a great time.

The only question I have is why do people claim such large areas of prime space. The guy next to us roped off an area larger than my yard, he had 30 feet on all sides of his rig. I was ridiculous and it appeared to be very common.

We has enough space for the RV and a few feet in front and behind. I have been camping a lot of places and never seen such a waste of prime space, and people seemed ok with it.

I would say the State does a piss poor job of managing this prime space. They charge $10 for a place worth a lot more than that and they allow people to take up huge spaces.

Unfortunately, there is an abundance of obnoxious people there. I imagine it's even worse on a holiday weekend.
