Oil Change for Honda

A quick oil change joint can have you in and out in 15 minutes probably with the car vacuumed too. I doubt any of you do-it-yourselfers can go from starting the job to having everything cleaned up and ready to run in that kind of time.

So decide if you have more time or money to burn. Keep in mind that buying the oil and filter yourself will still set you back around $15 for the cheap shit.

I can and do. It's all a matter of having the right disposal set up for the Oil.

LOL, nope, but I have one of those nice big deep fucker oil pans with a screen on the top to catch the oil pan bolt if it drops and a twist off spout on the side for pouring out the oil. I have a wide mouth 5 gallon jug I use for Oil disposal off to the side and I have a decent set of, "mechanic," gloves so I can jam my hand right in and crank the filter off with the engine warm so I get maximum old oil out. I use K&N filters most the time so I can crank them off easy with a socket rather than fiddling with a filter wrench. It's pretty easy to do it in 15 minutes or less if you have all the right tools in advance.

I always change my own. Its more expensive and takes about 40 mins start to finish.

One time i was so tired that i came back form the bathroom to find out i drained the trans fluid. No fluid in the garage means walking 3 miles round trip to kragen the next morning.

Auotzone has a never ending sale sale now. About $18 for brand name dino oil and fram filter.

Not sure how well they work for you, but I've found that K&N oil filters leaking more often than not. Fram and Penzoil filters too. Not sure if it's from installer incompetence or not.

But the hex end on the K&N is pretty handy but I've had a couple that were on so tight(still leaking though) that I've sheared the hex right off. But I have like a dozen different filter pliers, sockets, and so on to get the damn thing off one way or another.

^^^Ive never had any oil filter leak on any car....aricooled, watercooled, mann, fram, no name.....

Also never had good luck with filter wrenches except for that strap on thing that tightens as you turn. A real hassle but it works.....screw driver and hammer works even better

Dino oil + fram filter + socket wrench and a dirty rag = feeling like a man with greasy hands and a cold beer.

LOL, holy crap! Maybe you have guys coming in that are cranking 'em down too tight with a wrench? I do hand tight on and make sure to get a littel oil on the gasket for a nice seal and I haven't had any problems at all. Wrench torque off with hand tight on and I've never torqued the head off the filter. LOL, when I got this latest car, the crusty old filter was on so tight that I cracked my belt buckle in half using the belt as a strap wrench though.

call your local honda dealer, most dealers do oil changes for a reasonable price. while there, have them run the vin and check for any recalls. another dealer benefit, they should tell you of other items that need attention on your obviously neglected vehicle :twofinger

When you do dozens of oil changes a week...to hell with the greasy hands all the time. I wear latex gloves on every job I work on. When I tell people in person what I do for a living, I always hear something like "I never would've guessed since your hands are so clean."

I have a problem with my latex gloves always getting torn when I'm wrenching on stuff so I go through a few pairs each time I'm wrenching on my bike or car. Maybe I need to find thicker gloves.

Yeah, my hands sweat liek a motherfucke rin those things and when they tear I get a greasy salty engine filth/drivetrain/oil nightmare all sloshing around inside. I got some more durable textile gloves for it. They keep MOST the goo off your hands and protect from heat and sharp edges.

I prefer thinner latex :x

Wrap the oil filter in a home depot (more manly) or any plastic shopping bag and remove it that way. Helps aide in less of clean up. Buy a big jug of syntetic at Walmart too, only $18 for 5 quartz and it meets or exceeds everything the expensive stuff does.

BTW, I think he's on to something here... haven't seen leak problems associated with certain filters, but I have seen filters that felt like they were welded on, with obvious O-ring deformation and other issues when I finally got those bitches off.

I also suspect most 'quick' shops are too lazy to lube the seal on the new filter, too.

That plus over-tightening resulting in seal deformation, and, well...

I've never had an issue with a K&N leaking and I've been using them exclusively for the past 4-5 years. I, like Eldirty, always put some oil on the lip and hand tighten them.

Rob sees it all the time and he's the professional, but I wouldnt' be shocked if it was just from an excessive numbers of weenies crushing them when they put it on.

Oh, absolutely. I'm just pointing out that the filter probably isn't the issue but most likely said weenie. :laughing
