I work at an electronic retailer that shall remain nameless (rhymes with "lies") and have to walk in and out of the store 15 - 20 times a day. That being said, I have noticed that the latest trend seems to be to bringing your grandma to the store, using her for her handicapped parcking space and just leaving her in the car while you go shopping for electronics. Sometimes you leave the windows cracked, sometimes there is a bottle of water, but more often than not grandma is left with no food, no water, and the alarm set on the car. At least twice a week I see some poor old lady in a car with the alarm going off, the look of fear barely contained by her oxygen mask trying to figure out which way the robots are coming from to steal her meds.

I never understood why people would bring their pets someplace that they were not allowed to go and leave them locked in a closed car, but to lure grandma off of the couch with the promise of a prune smoothie just so you get a primo parking spot? Pathetic.

What's invisible and smells like dog food?

Old people's farts.

Huh, my grandma will just loan me the handicapped card. :twofinger

I have a friend with enough disability that she can hardly walk with a cane. Needless to say, when you take a place that is intended for people who are really handicapped, you are being totally selfish.

Sometimes my mom brings my dad out to go shopping. He's had 2 strokes in the last year and has a bit of trouble getting around, plus he has leukemia and gets tired very easily.

She will sometimes leave him in the car because he physically can't walk throughout the entire store without getting exhausted. {edit}He intends to get down and walk around, but sometimes fatigue catches up to him, so he elects to stay in the car rather than risk a fall.{/edit} He gets real stir-crazy just staying in the house all day. He also gets melancholy at times because he can't do everything he used to do--he was always very physically fit and after retiring used to walk 2-3 hours a day, and now can barely get from the car up the steps. But he always returns in good spirits after these little outings.

You don't always know the full story. :2cents

I hope you're joking, but if you aren't, be warned that if you get caught using it w/o the person who it belongs to, you can, and should get busted.

I agree with both, now I'm sure Kiwi was just saying it in jest, hopefully, but there are a lot of people around that take full advantage of other peoples handicap plaquards and it pisses me off to no end cuz my Mom has one and needs it most of the time cuz shes got two bum hips and has a helluva time getting around so for her to pull up and see someone without a disability parked there and practically skipping into the store is infuriating. :mad

True, but handicapped spot allocation is completely out of control these days. At my local supermarket, the closet 7 front spaces are handicapped despite the fact that there doesn't need to be more than 1 or 2.

San Francisco has issued 50k disabled parking placards! :wtf

I thought that they were going to crack down on that crap (they are losing $10k's of dollars a day from people wrongfully using them to park for work) but it must have become to unPC to do that.

I don't know how somebody could be so self-serving as to do that but apparently there is no shortage of scumbags out there.

I would fully support a $5k fine for abuse of these, where anybody caught parking in handicapped without being handicapped (or picking up a handicapped person) gets fined. :x

I was gonna say that! :laughing

Glad I didn't. :(
(I would have been joking BTW)

When my wife and I hooked up she had one. She had broken her ankle and couldn't walk on it for long distances even after the cast came off. Just walking from the handycapped spots accross the cement to the grocery store caused her so much pain she'd buy just what she needed and get out.

She's all healed up now. well mostly. Sometimes it still bothers her and we joke that we miss those days. But we'd never abuse it.

I have seen a couple of riders around here with handicap lic plates on their motorcycles... how can that be?

Oh, but back on topic... it seems like a win/win really; one gets a sweet parking spot, G-ma gets a little adventure out into the world, heck, she may even be able enough to load a flat panel TV into the back of the car!

Maybe a bum knee that keeps them from walking long distances but doesn't affect their ability to ride?

was gonna add, when we parked we'd get funny and sometimes pissed-off looks cause nobody was in a wheelchair, had a walker or crutches or even a cane.

Can't judge a book from it's cover.

Never got a placard and never took a handicap space. However, when I severely twisted my ankle a few years ago, I was on crutches. I asked if I can get a temporary placard so I can park in a handicap spot at work, but was refused. By the time I got downstairs in the garage to go into the building and then needing to go upstairs, my arm pits were freaking blistering!!! Now when I see people abusing, I feel like legitimizing their claim.

2 things...

1) if your armpits hurt you're using them wrong.
2) How are you sure they're abusing? If you saw me and my wife back then you'd probably think we were, but you wouldn't know she had major surgery on her ankle and spent 3 months in a wheelchair and 4 on crutches to finally be able to walk even a little without help, but only for short distances.

I completely agree.

My mother was in a bad car accident and broke her back in a couple of places. Eventually she was able to walk around again, but only for short periods of time before a lot of pain set in. She had a placard for the car as well. She looked fine getting out of the car, maybe moving a bit slower then most but ok for the most part, but by the time she had spent 15 minutes in the grocery store, she could barely make it back to the car.

Like you said, you can't judge a book by it's cover.

On the other hand, jerks who park in the handicap spaces "just for a second" are complete assholes and need a serious Ro-sham-bo. Same with the jerks on motorcycles who park beside handicap spaces on the spot with the lines through it, you know, the space where the wheelchair lift would go.

That's technically part of the parking spot and one can be cited for parking there without a placard. Also, I seem to see more cars doing that shit lately.
