Old school math vs Common Core

Little Ridley just finished elementary school and I remember helping with some of her math. There were a number of times I wondered why they didn’t teach it to us the same way that she is being taught. The different methods made some things so simple and some of the methods were just stupid. Like others have said everyone learns differently.

Common Core was introduced in 2010. This chart shows CA 4th graders have consistently lagged behind the nation before and after its introduction. 8th graders scores are similar.
There are other factors at work here but introducing Common Core was not a game changer.

Why does it feel like Common Core was created by english majors?

(Asked by an engineer who couldn't help his kids with their math homework)

I was super strong in math, but when I started helping my daughters with math I had to keep looking up terms because they changed the terminology so much from when I was a kid. It wasn't as much that they changed it, but that they had changed the terms, often in unnecessary, IMHO, ways.
