Paging PC Master Race - AMD Ryzen

i'll wait for real world bench marks, i'm still on a 3570k and there hasn't been a reason to upgrade processors to this date

Everyone's freaking out about more performance at half the cost.

Is this the equivalent of VW and diesel engines where they just built something that benchmarks really well but in real world situations doesn't quite deliver the same results? Or is this just where we're at with the technology?

A better analogy would be this: Imagine you have the choice between an Intel CPU/GPU and an AMD CPU. The median-price-range Intel item would be like a brand-new S1000RR and the median-priced AMD would be like a ZX-10R from 4 years ago.

AMD can't compete in terms of engineering and circuit architecture. They exist as a cheaper and less powerful alternative that for many people is in fact a better deal. For instance, if you want to build a gaming PC for $300, it'd be a wise investment to get an AMD CPU/GPU because you can get something that is comparable but reduced in price.

To be a bit more technical, AMD's business model seeks to beat Intel/nVidia in PPD (Performance/Points Per Dollar). People had the same reaction when the RX480 came out because compared to nVidia's GeForce GTX 960 (Their best top-tier PPD contender) it was winning in PPD.

However, if you personally value performance, there is a spot in the PPD curve (which starts out steep and tapers off at higher prices) where you can get big performance while still spending proportionally less money. That's usually where I buy.

Agreed. Even if you're not gaming most software as of late has GPU rendering enabled by default and SLI/Crossfire support is becoming more commonplace.

My brother worked at Intel and he said that every few years they typically stop working on minimizing CPU circuit architecture because they need to wait for GPU performance to catch up otherwise there will be a huge dip in the CPU sales while R&D costs surge.

i'm more interested in the GPU match up here in the next couple of weeks

i currently have a gtx 970 and had a 7970 before that

i wanted to like AMD but my god were the drivers terrible, if they price their next card right in relation to its performance maybe i'll try them again but they left a bad taste in my mouth

Recommend buying a 980Ti. I had an EVGA 970FTW before.

I got one new-in-box for $400 after the 1k series pascal cards came out.

I pretty much have given up on AMD after how well Intel has treated me. I'm still on a 4790 and haven't found a legit reason to upgrade from z97 to z170 or x99. Reaaaaaaaalllyyy tempted to go balls out for 6950X and ignore next cpu cycle. More PCI-E lanes are very tempting tho, but talking major buckage lol :laughing

Only legend I've heard about AMD is they don't like high temps - if I were to get one, I'd spring for a really good air cooler, or a sealed liquid system, and a good airflow case. I really like the corsair h110i gtx I have.

I'd probably wait for some nerd blogs to geek out on it and see how well it performs.

Agreed, I've got two evga superclocked 980ti's and they handle just about everything, even on my 1440 monitors. Unless the 1080ti's (if they come out) really knock shit outta the park, no real reason to upgrade other than pcie lanes for m.2s or pci ssds.

if? they already have a count down on their website :laughing

Haha totally didn't see that. Still, unless you're 4k gaming on multiple monitors and demand 60fps min, they better be fucking insane to upgrade. It'll likely be total overkill for 1080p gaming

i have a 1440p monitor also (sammy ultra wide), i can't max bf1 at 3440x1440 without getting some major slow downs. At 1080 it's not really an issue as long as I leave aa off. I hear you though, not even sure if I feel like upgrading yet, performance and price will dictate.

If the 1080Ti comes out I'm just gonna buy a 1070/1080. I like to stay about one generation behind. More cost effective.

My 980Ti is the MSI Lightning version. I like it because it can OC better than the stock OC cards. Imagine a Classified version with independent voltage controls across multiple components.

I had trouble running 3440x1440 with my 970, that's why I upgraded.

What refresh rate does your monitor do? Mine's stuck at 60 and it's only supported by DisplayPort. Tried OC'ing the pixel clock but anything higher than like 5 more will fuck the screen up. Found out that with most games, running >90fps uncapped will actually minimize screen tears more than limiting 60fps @60Hz. Unfortunately that means I usually have to run in 2560x1080 because I can't get an extra 30fps at native res.

60hz, don't think there was a 144hz ultrawide one at the time i bought this one. I think they're all TN panels anyways, i'll take an IPS (i think that's what this one is) or PVA panel over a TN panel any day of the week, even if the refresh rate is lower.

You really notice a difference with upper hz monitors. Mine are Asus ROG 144hz 28inch IPS panels, and really get very little screen tearing when fps drops below the refresh rate. They're not gsync either, which surprised me more. Along with a solid gpu, I highly recommend a higher hz monitor. I won't ever go back, it's that good, even for doing anything else on the computer.

guess it just doesn't bother me as much, care about colors and screen uniformity way more than i care about refresh rate, especially because i typically don't play games that my system can get frame rates over 60 continuously

maybe i'm just ignorant, i haven't tried one, i just have trouble being sold on one as per reviews

Still just doing 1080p gaming on a big screen TV.

My HTPC refresh will be AMD based, same as it is now.
