Finally getting around to putting in my two cents on the trip. Based on connectivity and time this is already behind schedule, but I'll try to catch up / keep up.

Suffice to say it's pretty awesome so far.

Well the Wi-Fi is being weird here and working well on my phone and not at all on my laptop, so forgive any typos or brevity in this post, but I gotta get going on this, and I may as well start from the beginning.

Having sent a deposit for the trip many months prior I had put it off as "something in the future" in my mind. That is until it was time to pay and I realized it was a month out. Luckily I like to pack light and didn't see any need for additional gear. So, a few days before the trip I laid things out and then a day before my flight finally zipped everything up and was ready to go. Riding gear in the duffle, everything else in backpack.

Are you on the 450 or the 150

Very nice Nate, thank you for sharing!

I've ridden North America east, west, north and south including Canada and Mexico but have never ridden outside of the continent. Perhaps one day?

Do they give out "performance awards" over there?

Finally, some wifi. To answer some questions, yes I did choose the 450, it feels like a slightly bigger DRZ, pretty capable in the dirt, pretty comfortable on pavement. I'll have to get my thoughts together a put up a review. I'm sure Butch has some thoughts as well. Cops, we rode right around them, most traffic laws appear to be mere suggestions.

Stay safe and have fun Nate! (..and the rest...)
I can't fucken wait for you to get home, collect your thoughts and pics and produce another epic "work productivity time suck" thread.
My boss still hates you from your Alaska trip days.

At any rate, I caught car to SFO, ensuring I'd be there for my departure a good 3 hours early, just in case. Luckily, security was light and I was through quickly at walking through the international terminal to find my gate. I took a quick pit stop and set my helmet on a shelf above the urinal. As I was wrapping up I heard the person next to me comment on my helmet bag "Arai makes good helmets!". I looked over and it was Butch. I hadn't realized we had the same flight out, but it appears we did. Given that, we found our gate and then had a few drinks at a bar while we waited to board the flight.

We were both rather excited for our trip.

After said drinks and a bathroom break it was time to board. Butch had an earlier group so I lost track of him at boarding. I was less excited about 15 hours in economy, but thankfully, Emirates made it pretty comfortable all things considered.

Turns out you can just keep asking for a beer and a shot. I exercised restraint after a few rounds as I didn't want to show up to Pakistan hung over. The flight home will likely see no such restraint.

I caught up with Butch in Dubai and we had just enough time to walk to our connecting flight to Islamabad. Despite being fed three times on the previous flight we were served "dinner" on that flight, it was good, but unnecessary and I failed to take pictures until we got to the airport.

Despite it being 1:30am the airport was busy and the greeting area for arrivals was jam packed, luckily we had no problem finding our driver and then it was 30 minutes to our hotel for the night.

The next day was a low key day in Islamabad. We met up with others on the tour and one of the guys from A Different Agenda, Jimmy, (aka Hassan) for breakfast and coffee.

Given the temps were hovering around 110 we kept things air conditioned, going to a mall to stay cool and give folks a chance to get any last minute items, then lunch at a Pakistani restaurant called Kokakola. The food was really good.

After lunch we went to grab coffee, and again bask in the glory of AC. I grabbed a picture of this vintage scooter out front. I thought it might have been marketing for a business but I'm told the only scooters like this to be found in Pakistan are all vintage.

We then returned to the hotel to let things cool off for a bit before venturing out to see the Shah Faisal Masjid Mosque.

It was near time for evening prayers and this mosque gets a fair number of pilgrims, so there were interesting modes of transport on display.

Shoes did have to come off to go inside, and the carpet was quite lush. The space was huge and while it never filled fully, there was a constant stream of mean heading towards the front of the mosque to pray. Once the prayer started I felt weird just standing around, so I went to look at the display cases, turns out they are full of old Qurans, and turns out, some of those a really beautifully illustrated.

After prayer we were quite popular with the locals. Most folks wanted to know where we were from and to get a picture. One little girl who was probably 6 was brought over by her parents to get a photo with me. She asked me where I was from, shook my hand and told me "welcome to Pakistan" after we took a picture. Everyone was friendly and wanted to know how we liked Pakistan.

After the mosque, it was time to grab dinner so we could all attempt to sleep before our morning flight to Skardu where we'd meet Moin and pick up our bikes. Jimmy took us to a Afgan restaurant and produced one heck of a spread which we all enjoyed along with a few of his friends who were also riders. The food was great, but the jetlag was strong and I was ready to attempt sleep.

The next day we were up early and off to the airport to board our flight. The line for check in wasn't moving as fast as it should, but since no one seemed worried, I wasn't worried. Eventually we all made it through and boarded the plane.

Thank you Nate for another wonderful ride report.

Ok but... what about the motorcycles right? Well, after we got settled in at the hotel, it was time to head to Moin's newly finished garage in Skardu to pick up our bikes. We hopped into the van and headed across town. We were greated with fresh cherries and a garage full of shiny motorcycles (which I failed to take a photo of because I was distracted by said shiny bikes.

Said cherries, the silverware was there because "americans always use silverware to eat :laughing "

After coffee where I foolishly got an iced drink, we made our way back to the hotel with our bikes to get ready for the ride out the following morning. The road as nice and windy, but lanes are barely suggestions in Pakistan, so you really had to late apex everything and leave room for mid corner adjustments to account for gravel, missing pavement, cars fully in your lane, etc. Once you come to expect it, it kinda ads to the excitement of cornering :laughing

Waiting for the rest of the group who may have been less excited about these risk than some of us.

I suppose I should mention, the weather had been pretty darn hot for the past two days. It was 116 in Islamabad the day we were there, and while I don't know how hot ti was in Skardu when we landed, it felt like it was in 90s. While lying under the ceiling fan in my room which was running at such a high speed I thought it might lift the roof, I wondered how I'd far riding all day in the heat.

Thankfully, when I woke up the next morning the weather had decided to give us a break as it was overcast and drizzling. While this would impact the views along the ride, I was happy to have the break in temps.

We all gathered in the dining hall for Chai and food. Eggs and curried chick peas for breakfast is definitely something I could get used to.

After a few more cups of Chai it was time to get ready and head out. Today's ride was to be a long one, as we were taking the Karakoram Highway all the way up to Passu, a distance of roughly 200 miles. While this sounds like a short ride, things take a little long on Pakistani roads, added to that a group of riders getting familiar with their bikes and these roads, we were looking at about 8 hours or so.

We made our way through Skardu, with a quick stop outside of the city to a view of Indus river looking back towards the city.

The local riders have some pretty cool bikes and demonstrate that any bike is a touring bike.

After this stop we took off with Moin leading and Jimmy sweeping (along with our support vehicle a ways further back). This meant that after a few photo stops I ended up riding mostly along for long stretches until the next regroup, which was great. One such photo stop in an attempt to capture the Indus. The river is incredibly powerful and the photo doesn't do it justice. Moin said at high flows there would be water splashing onto the roadway in places and I believe it.

Being a young, tall, heavily glaciated mountain range, erosion in the Karakoram range is a constant. The road had frequent spot where it had partially washed out, been covered by a landslide (sometimes cleared, sometimes not)or with pavement damaged by the elements or falling rocks. It was a blast to ride, but it definitely kept you on your toes.

Did I mention there were numerous check points? These made for good regroup spots as Moin would need to show paper work and we'd all need to pass through together. Turns out they have "tourist police" whose job is less about policing tourists and more about ensuring everyone stays safe.

At one point I was waved over by one of these tourist police and given a lecture on the roads and and driving style in Pakistan with the advice to slow down and be safe. I'm guessing earlier members of the group might have been blazing when they passed the guy. I just smiled and nodded until he was satisfied with his speech and sent me on my way.

At one of the regroup stops there was a few shops and residences, a good opportunity to get water and use the bathroom. Though we had to wait for the owner of the store to come down from his apartment..

I used their restroom (which was cleaner than many bars I've been to in SF) and procured an energy drink. I was then handed an Apricot as they were in season and took the risk of eating it.

Back at the bikes, there were a handful of folks who came over to pictures and to talk. I got a few selfies myself, seemed only fair.

After this stop, and a few breaks to attempt to get more pictures of the Indus River (I'll spare ya those), I was thoroughly on my own, with the rest of the group either in front of behind me. Passing cars, navigating the road, and or lack thereof all by myself for what felt like a very long time. At one point I started to grow concerned that I had somehow missed the group. Eventually I pulled over figuring that the riders behind me would catch up, or, I could circle back. Two kids walked over and asked me were I was from. After that exchange they just kinda stood around staring at me for a while before wandering off. I suppose I shoulda been packing candy or something. Right as I was about to back track, a few folks behind me rolled by, and as I hopped on my bike to catch them I realized everyone had stopped to regroup about 100 yards past where I stopped. Opps.
