Parking etiquette for motorcycles

Also, it was kinda of covered by Scott but if there is no other suitable parking space, and you have to take a car spot, park so another bike (or two) can also share it with you.

My question is...how? If it's best to park in the middle-rear of the space, that doesn't really make it easy for another bike to park with you

Not etiquette but:
I've always preferred parking front wheel out towards the street. Since most streets are crowned, I feel it's easier to get a proper lean onto the kickstand facing out, as well as not having to back the bike 'uphill' to leave. Sidestand up, and gone. :later
I was going to mention something related to this.

When parking somewhere that isn't flat, park the bike so that it's pointed uphill. It stresses the sidestand in the right direction so that your bike isn't going to roll forward off of it, and it's easier to get out of the spot. If you pull forward into a normal parking spot that is uphill, the bike will just roll back out of it easily enough when you're ready to go. If the spot is pointed downhill, you won't have to struggle to back the bike uphill to get out. I've only done that a few times, but even once is too many, especially with a heavier bike like my KTM.

When parking in a flat area, although it's not that hard to back a bike out of a spot, it's so much easier to back in so you can take off like Stormdragon recommends. :cool

Why the middle? Just park towards the rear of the space and leave enough room for another bike.

I guess I don't have to park in the middle. But I've seen too many shitty drivers in my day. I'd rather park in the middle to reduce the risk of someone bumping my bike, at the expense of another motorcycle having to look somewhere else

My favorite are those that hug the left part of the space. I park in the middle of mine, but they only have a couple inches to get in their door.

The flaw in your thinking is that someone who parked to one side of a space may in fact be doing so because of another person who parked to one side of a space.

Then the space on their other side opens up later on, and you park in such a way to deliberately make their life harder.

Because then a douchebag rider will block me in. I'll park at the front of a spot, and a bit off to one side so that another bike can go past me and park in the back of the spot, if they want.
Also, I park nose out, so I don't have to fuck around with backing up when I leave.

That is very true. But, I don't deliberately hog the side of the space they're on. I always park my cage in the MIDDLE of my space. The reason for another car not parking in the middle of their space isn't really up to me.

If cars want to park shitty because the car next to them parked shitty, that's fine. But that row of shitty parking stops at my car:laughing

Yeah, that is what I mean. Just leave some space for another bike to get past.

I was tempted once to park close to the driver's door of a car that wasn't parked between the lines in the parking lot of my dentist. I didn't, but made some comment about the parking when I was in the office, and a woman in her late 70's indicated that it was her car. At that point I was thankful that I didn't make it more difficult for her to get into her car and leave.

Sometimes there are better reasons than that the driver is a jerk for why someone can't seem to center their vehicle properly. If it's an old Buick or Mercury, the driver might have done the best they could. If it's a jacked up 4x4 or lowered Integra with special bodywork, they probably deserve having a hard time getting into their vehicle. :laughing

Yep, that's the way to do it. Though I've only seen it once or twice, I always have a good laugh when I see someone who parked downhill and has a struggle to back the bike out of the parking spot. I figure if they do that once or twice they should get it.

I still don't understand how so many riders are concerned about leaving space for another rider. I get that we're a small brother/sisterhood, but when leaving space for another rider in a normal parking spot, you open yourself up to bike damage from both idiot riders and idiot cagers. I'll continue to take a full spot, thank you.

No trick to it. I park on sidewalks next to entrances whenever I can, taking foot traffic and general space requirements into consideration. Never been ticketed for it, but there are cases when I've been expecting one.

Pretty much this. It's a motorcycle :D. I just avoid handicapped parking spots and I leave room for other bikes if possible.

I get that we're a small brother/sisterhood,

Not 100% sure you do "Get that"

Nope, sorry lol

Old age isn't an acceptable reason (IMO) for refusing to correct parking. Though if I came back and saw an old lady struggle to enter her door through the 10 inch space between her car and mine....I'd feel a little bad :laughing

I still don't understand how you can't leave room for another bike without leaving yourself vulnerable to damage from cagers.
I dislike seeing a motorcycle taking an entire parking space.

I certainly do. And I've been around long enough to know that many don't. 'Ever had your nice new shiny bike fucked up by some inconsiderate fuck who parked next to you and left a nice boot mark on your bags when they dismounted? Or had some dumb shit cager bang their car door into the side of your bike and drive off because you parked to the side of the spot on the off-chance another rider might use the space? I have. Fuck leaving room for some stranger I don't even know. I'll be nice in other ways like helping stranded riders, providing good advice in The Garage, etc. I'll leave making room for two bikes in one parking spot for those who don't care what happens to their bike.

No, I haven't :dunno

Must be a Karma thing :twofinger

Had a driver back in to my bike that was parked in a car spot. She managed to break the right foot peg and bend the rear brake pedal. Luck would have it that the bike never fell over. There were witnesses who saw the incident, one of them handing me the description of the car/driver.

This was at the Starbucks on Santa Teresa/Blossom Hill.
