the recent weather and my snowboarding addiction coupled with california laws requiring 4x4 vehicles to cary chains even if they aren't required on your vehicle at the time, i start calling around to various "big box" car parts shops.

after two exchanges like this i am now shopping on the internet.

ME: "i need some tire chains"
idiot: "ok"
ME: "for a 33x9.5"
idiot: what size is the tire?
ME: 33x9.5
idiot: no the size, like 235 something..
ME: 33x9.5 is the size, it's not a metric tire
idiot: oh, let me look

oh well. maybe if lifted trucks start getting featured on the video of the day on MTV the IQ of parts monkeys will increase, or at least their education level.

another angry cutomer.................

dang, no patience these days.....:(

maybe the dude was having an off day.

Maybe you should get some 35's like a real man and you'll get more respect at the parts counter

I couldn't agree with you more. Hey, since when do 4x4's need to have chains? I always thought it was either or?

you think if they had college backgrounds and common sense they'd be workin at an auto parts store? give em a break and buy your chains online :)

in general, yeah that's true.

http://www.tirechain.com/california-chain-requirement.htm

the requirement is

R1- snow tires required (M+S level, not studs

R2- chains for everyone that doesn't have 4 driven wheels and M+S or better tires

R3- if you don't have 4x4 AND chains you aren't going anywhere, legally or realistically.

it looks like at R2 and worse, you have to at least CARRY the chains or be subject to a fine even if you have 4x4 capability. personally, i don't want to drive in an R3 situation but i'd like to have the option.

I've never seen an "R3" situation before. Normally they just close the highway. And even then it's not usually a traction issue for 4x4s, its a visibility issue.

happened at 3 different stores, and one was a chick you sexist :twofinger

Come on, how many people have non-metric tires these days?

If you got the same questions every day and then someone throws a simple one at you that is a bit out of the ordinary, you tend to go "huh?" Remember, you think these people were idiots, but I guarantee the majority of customers they deal with "are" idiots.

Now, had the guys/girl said, "what do you mean non-metric?" then I would agree with you.

not a huge amount but alot of off-road tires, especially for 15" rims (mainly Rangers) use the other version. i believe BFG Baja T/A's are exclusively sold like that. To the systems credit, i find it a hack of alot easier than the metric system for know wtf is on your car.

after i've said the size twice, then having to state: "it's not a metric tire"

is different from

"what do you mean non-metric"

how?

granted, there are plenty of idiot customers that walk into pepboys, kragen etc etc etc. one might even suppose that simply walking into that type of auto parts store qualifies one for idiot status. i've been in quite a few of them, always wondering what exactly what an electric scooter, or mini dune buggy has to do with cars and usually leaving unsatisfied.

hire idiots as a favor to the rest of society but PLEASE, for the love of ALL that is HOLY don't let them answer the phone at the parts counter. i'm sure they can scan barcodes into the cash register just fine, especially when you tell them how much change to give on a $9.99 purchase paid for with $10.00 cash. i repeat: PLEASE, Not the PARTS Counter

is it ok for a parts monkey to be ignorant of the difference between SAE and metric threads?

how about the existance of 6 volt cars back in the day, and some of them are still on the road and you can get parts for them?

if i'd called one store and gotten this ignorance i'd chalk it up to bad luck but 3 separate stores i really can't excuse.

15" rims aren't even remotely limited to rangers. my land cruiser came stock with them, in fact all land cruisers through about 1996 or so did. chevy blazer, bronco etc etc etc. it's a very common light truck size and still has the most availability in agressive offroad tires. 16" is catching up though

no way, that guy is irritable :laughing
at least i didn't call on christmas

Well, you do call them "Parts Monkey", what do you expect?:laughing

But seriously, if I had a penny for all the stupid questions I have answered at my store over and over and over and over and over and over (well you get the idea) I could have retired last year.

Gone are the days when you went into a parts store and could ask a questions and even get the guy to help diagnose your problem. Now any warm body can answer the phone and you had better know exactly what you want and every detail about your car or they can't get it for you.

That being said, somebody not knowing the difference between an SAE and Metric tire size is not suprising. Shit, I had a 18 year old ask "who is James Brown" yesterday.:rolleyes

Just face it, you are becoming an old fogey and next thing you know you will be yelling at the kids to get off your lawn.:twofinger

things really are different where you live aren't they?

the only way i'll be able to afford land with a lawn around here is the piece of turf i'm burried under. i am looking for a good broom handle to bang on the ceiling with

parts monkey is a term of endearment, really, i swear. just like pig and hooli

Braddah Kimo says "if you have high expectations then expect to have high disappointments".

once again, we are talking about an employee who earns peanuts a day at a corporate owned store. they will probably work there for a matter of months, not years.

you can't expect someone like that to be on top of things if you make a non-standard inquiry. be thankful that they got it at all.

A "true parts guy" is gold. They are few and far between nowadays... I worked in an auto parts store about 25yrs ago(pre-intercrap) and the guys that worked the counter were often in their 40's and 50's(retired mechanics) that had "real knowledege" about cars, parts, fitment, interchangeability, and the like and where to find those parts. The entire model of parts sales(retail) and fitment not to mention the amount of info available to the general consumer along with direct delivery has cut the bottom out of parts sales as a reliable revenue stream.

They just don't pay them like that anymore... They can't afford to... That's the answer, You get what you pay for...
