PHOTOGRAPHY - The official Camera-setup Thread

I've had every 'twist' body coolpix since 950.

That camera was the bomb back in the day.. I got my first DSLR (D30) in '01. I still can't believe how much I paid for it, but it was such a fantastic camera.

hm...anyone have an idea on what's a really good "all around" upgrade to the kit lens for the canon?

I'm using the 17-40 f/4L as my walkaround. The price is not bad considering it's L glass. I'd expect sharpness to be a slight bit better though.

hm...

thinking of the 17-85 f/4.5-5.6 IS

slightly cheaper than the 17-40 you have so i can get a hood and filter for it and come out slightly less.

pros/cons?

want to have a "best bang for the buck" type lens that does most shots.

cause the next 1 i'm going for is the 70-200 f/2.8

Hey camera pros,

Has anyone tried one of these?

I'm going to give it a shot. It would add these lenses to my arsenal, which would be nice...

PhotoZone had a mixed review of the 17-85, mainly chromatic aberration issues, but bottom line, said it was a very convenient lens. The IS would be nice to have too, it would certainly increase the number of "keeper" shots.

I've been considering a 70-200 also. Maybe the f/4 to save some bucks.

I am a Nikon guy myself...

Body is a Nikon d70 that has d70s software loaded.
Glass is always Nikon, I dont believe in the off brand crap. Good glass is an investment. Right now for wide angle I use an 18-70 1:3.5-4.5 G ED and for tele..I shoot with a 70 - 210 mm f/4 - 5.6 D. Saving for an AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D ED. But we will see how that goes.

Here are a few shots of what is normal through my camera. Not the best photographer, I admit :)

forgot to mention, as far as Moto goes, I will hopefully be getting my hands into this race season!

Canon 20D

Usually aperture priority, lowest ISO I can get away with (or use noise ninja).
Use exposure bracketing a lot as the dynamic range of digi doesn't match film, shoot RAW with small jpeg's also.

I have 17-40 F4L canon, 28-200mm canon USM and 50mm F1.4 USM. I plan on swapping the 28-200mm for a 70-200 F4L

Good call on the RAW. I always shoot raw, that way if I goof a shot as far as exposure, its easy to fix.

Another....both taken with 50mm F1.4 USM...

hrm... i've heard that the 1.4 isn't worth theextra bling. i've got a 50 f/1.8, and it does pretty darn good. what's your thoughts?

this was taken 2 nights ago with the 50 1.8.

i tried the 50mm f/1.4 for a week or 2 and while it's nice and definitely stands out for build quality, it's not worth the extra $$. at least to me.
