Looking for a small pit bike to bring with me to the track that will permanently reside in my trailer. Ideally, the bike can sit for a few weeks at a time without being ridden. I did a CL search for "pit bike" and see all kinds of things, but unfortunately know nothing about them.

I'm also looking for ideas on securing the bike, I really hate tie downs. What do you all think about something like: http://www.spudbilt.com/Products/BikeShoe/tabid/250/Default.aspx

Quick photo shop of how I plan to store it. I can fit a car, or four bikes in the car area. The pit bike would be positioned perpendicular to wall in front of everything.

My recommendation is anything without a clutch; zuma, ttr90, crf70, etc. That way you can carry something in your left hand while riding the pit bike.

Fuel injected is nice too. Are there any small bikes like the ttr/crf that are FI?

Ct70... foldable bars for storage.

Scooters seem like a good bet based on what I've seen at the track. Look for a twisty throttle with enough floor-board space for your gas can or a set of tires.

The floor-board space is a huge benefit of the scooter. Much easier to carry shit than any other vehicle. A bicycle with a trailer is another good bet.

Kymco scooter.
They need Sta-Bil if they sit a while. Disable the clock to save the battery drain over time unless you can snake in a BT. Most have kick starters.

Some models are injected, even easier

JC Whitney trunk or milk crate.

And get a 10.00 solar battery charger from HF. I use on on my BMW race bike with total loss ignition. Perfect.

And here's one for a good deal: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/mcy/4774015643.html

I have one and use it as a pit bike. It's godsend, and the semi-automatic 3-speed gearbox IS awesome for when I have to hold something with my left hand while riding around the paddock. In fact, the bike is so awesome, I wish mine was plated so I can scoot around town with it.

Easy is good. I like the idea of the milk crate. Already have power from my solar array on the roof, so I'm good to go there!

I've got a little Honda dirt bike... but truth be told, I actually really like my mountain bike. When I stay at the track, if I'm headed for the showers at 5:30am, I'm using the mountain bike. Beats the hell out of walking, and no way I'm firing up the dirt bike at that time.
Some of my pitmates have a scooter. Automatic, quiet, deck to carry stuff.
Some of my other pitmates have electric razor-type scooters, and those are just downright FUN! They're larger sized, with enough room on the deck that you can get wheels back and forth for tires. It's a beautiful thing! :)

depending on the track, I usually pit far away from things bc the truck and trailer is so big. fi scooter is probably the route i'm going to go.

next up...how to secure the thing without straps. i hate straps :thumbdown

Bolt 2 recessed D-rings just beneath where the foot pegs would be in your rig and use turnbuckle hooks to tie it down.

Something like a TTR125L is popular and there's no battery to charge. A scooter with a kick-starter sounds pretty good too. I haven't looked in while but, the Honda Metropolitan had a kick starter at one point. You could throw a solar trickle-charger on your trailer to keep the battery topped off while it's sitting. You'd still have to worry about gas going stale though.

The sport chock (or whatever) works pretty well but, I've had bikes fall out of 'em in a trailer if they weren't tied down as well. There's the Pit-Bull Trailer Restraint but, I'm not sure that would work with many pitbikes (This does list some small honda dirtbikes and the Grom). The T-Rex strapless tie downs could probably be adapted to most anything. For a scooter you could probably just make a box out of 2x4's that would keep it mostly in place while resting on it's floor boards.

I got by with a Razor kick scooter for years and years. Small, no batteries, gas or noise to worry about and I could set tires or a gas can on the deck and still ride it.

I know you've already said no to the bicycle, but seriously, reconsider. Get a drop bar (or short flat bar) single speed bike that can take 700x32 tires and a rack that you can tie a milk crate to. Don't buy a xmart bike, get a proper LBS bike (or used).

Low cost, low storage space, low maintenance.
