Thursday night, a Fresno police officer was seriously injured when a woman turned left in front of him and he t-boned her car. The officer was thrown clear, suffering a broken elbow. He was also severely burned because the bike burst into flames upon impact. Anyone hear of a BMW doing this before?

NW Fresno crash injures police officer
Posted at 07:23 PM on Thursday, Mar. 11, 2010
The Fresno Bee

A Fresno police officer was injured Thursday evening in a fiery two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Bullard and Fruit avenues in northwest Fresno.

Loran Baker said his granddaughter, Laura Puma, in her 20s, was driving eastbound on Bullard and turning north on Fruit when her vehicle and the officer's motorcycle collided. Puma told Baker she did not see the westbound motorcycle until just before the impact. Both vehicles caught on fire after the crash.

The officer, who was not identified, was taken to Community Regional Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, Lt. Joyce Vasquez said.

I doubt it's a BMW problem- any bike with the right amount forces applied can blow up like a pinto.

gas + hot engine =explosive fun!

So, all that has to happen is the gas tank is compromised or a fuel line breaks free.

Best wishes to the officer.

Wonder if it had the metal or plastic QD's on the fuel lines. Plastic ones have had failures, but BMW likes to deny it's a problem.

[hyjack]If you have 5/16 fuel lines and plastic QD's, PM me for the metal replacement part numbers from Omega (OEM for the QD's)

The Fresno Bee's updated story makes it sound like it was his fault. Sheesh.
Fresno motorcycle officer Mike Roberts, 42, faces a lengthy hospital stay after he was severely burned Thursday night when he collided with a car in northwest Fresno, Chief Jerry Dyer said today.

Roberts was westbound on Bullard Avenue when he ran into a car that was turning left from eastbound Bullard onto Fruit Avenue. The officer’s BMW slammed into the side of the car and Roberts was thrown over the car.

Dyer said that upon impact, the BMW exploded into flames and Roberts suffered second- and third-degree burns on the side of his body, a gash on his leg, a compound fractured elbow, a concussion and broken ribs. Roberts has already undergone surgery on the elbow but will have to undergo several operations and likely skin grafts for the burns. Dyer said the stay in the Community Regional Medical Center burn unit might be “prolonged.”

“I believe that it’s a result of good equipment and God’s grace that Mike Roberts was not more seriously injured or even killed,” Dyer said. “The motorcycle completely disintegrated. There’s very little left. We were very fortunate.”

The department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash to determine whether any charges will be filed against the driver of the car, Dyer said.

Heal well, Officer!

This.

I'd put money on a fuel line failure, too. I can more or less guarantee there was no explosion, just fire. Gas tanks really have a hard, hard time exploding, or even burning very much inside. However, pour fuel from a failed fitting or line onto a hot, possibly sparking engine (there is a collision going on, after all) and you'll get engulfing flames.

I noticed that news in general tend to word things to make it appear that two wheeled transportation was at fault.

Better gear for mounted officers, dang it.

This!

I took the Salinas Californian to task about this some years ago. A motorcyclist was hit head-on and killed by a bozo who was passing, in a no passing zone, in fog. The article stated that the "motorcyclist struck the car..." Took me a letter and two phone calls before the editor conceded that the wording was misleading.

Best wishes to the officer.

BMW has superceeded the part to metal replacements

Thursday night, a Fresno police officer was seriously injured ... Anyone hear of a BMW doing this before?

Just did a cursory online search, and the two most recent stories of motor cop bikes bursting into flames after impacting a vehicle involved a Harley and a Honda. You'd prolly need to use LexisNexis to find other instances of exploding bikes.

According to some witnesses in this local tv news story, the fire from Officer Roberts' blazing bike reached traffic signal height. Motorists and passersby used their jackets to help smother the flames on him. Even his boots were on fire. The current Fresno Bee story includes a photo of the destroyed-to-a-crisp bike. I like how he was quoted as saying he wanted to return to motors after his recuperation.

For someone who takes news video for a living, I'd say your judgment call regarding my statement lacks any objectivity. For if you'd bother to read the latest Fresno Bee story, you'd see how much in just a matter of hours that the story had been tightened up. Namely:
A Fresno motorcycle officer faces a lengthy hospital stay after he was severely burned Thursday night after a collision with a car in northwest Fresno, Chief Jerry Dyer said Friday.

Officer Mike Roberts, 42, was westbound on Bullard Avenue when a car eastbound on Bullard turned left in front of him onto Fruit Avenue.

The officer’s BMW slammed into the side of the car and Roberts was thrown over the car ....

No longer is there any implication or inference that Officer Roberts was not in control of his motorcycle in the moment before impact. The new wording makes it clear that he had nowhere to go and no time to react when the car turned in front of him.

Not the first BMW to blow up.

But that motor LEO incident occurred after the CHP officer had stopped and was off his bike to assist a stranded motorcyclist. It was very similar to the horrible crash that paralyzed CHP Officer Pedeferri a couple of Decembers ago.

Still your link led to at least three incidents where CHP motors were killed after vehicles turned in front of them (in 2003 and 2004) but no mention of their BMW bikes exploding on impact. One involved an officer who was awarded the CHP Medal of Valor for rescuing a driver in the rubble of the collapsed Cypress Freeway.

The "number" of problem with BMW police bikes might be related to fact that most of them are BMW's thereby giving the appearance of more "failures". If they were predominantly Honda's or Kawi's for instance, the number "failures" would point to a "problem" with them. It's a numbers game to some extent IMO.

On a second note, why do motor officers insist on wearing poly/ cotton and leather boots for protection? I have never understood the "it won't happen to me" metality not wearing better protective gear presents. Just wondering if there's a motor officer who'd like to offer up???
