Tux,
So the leak has been identified / found on your side of the meter? Did PG&e replace your meter 4-6 years ago with the new style "smart meter"?
Get a spray bottle filled with dish soap / water mix and spray all the threaded connections on the meter, shut-off valve and the service regulator and look for any sign
of bubbles.
On the meter there are two connections (in and out flow) that use gaskets. These gaskets have been know to fail and produce a small leak.
I would infrequently get a whiff of gas between my house and the neighbors and decided to spray "it" with soapy water. Small bubbles on the "inlet" side of the meter connection. Called PG&E, gave them name, address, etc. and they said someone would be there within 10 minutes, then gave all the precautionary measures to take, etc, etc. But what I found strange (and kind of funny afterwards) was what they asked me next: "Have you called the media?" I responded "no, should I ?" They said: "Ok, no, that's not necessary".
Truck arrived promptly, with a sniffer meter and spray bottle. Leak at meter inlet connection. They removed meter and replaced gaskets and then checked water heater and furnace for correct operation. All good.
