It actually fits the definition of a ram air kit quite well. The only reason to point the snorkel forward is that while you are moving there is positive pressure at the mouth of the snorkel. The rear wheel well location provides the same thing: positive pressure. It's just a different way to go about it. It definitely has an effect, which is what I was looking for. Maybe it's just the engineer in me that made me do it this way. To each their own, I suppose.

I have wondered about this too as it looks like the under seat area is pretty closed off to me too. You can always ride with the side cover off for a comparison but the added intake roar may fool you so I never tried it.

Well I got her dirty for the first time today...:teeth:(

How much pressure above ambient did you measure at that location and at what speed?

I haven't measured pressure directly, due to the obvious difficulties with doing that in such a location. I did, however measure the flow rate with the stock setup vs. the ram air and I have more than doubled the flow in the 25-60 mph range, which is where I spend the majority of my riding time. Unfortunately, the flow meter to which I have access wouldn't really allow me to test air flow through the filter very well, so I can't compare my results to those obtained via the 3x3 mod. I would wager that they are similar. This is just another way to skin the airflow cat, and an interesting project. I wouldn't say it is in any way superior to the 3x3 method, but I believe that the end result is similar. That said, the 3x3 is certainly easier (and cheaper).

2x the air needs 2x the fuel. You must be running pretty damn lean now.

I had to go up one size on the main after the ram air addition. It's actually not quite as simple as a 1:1 scale up of air and fuel, but it did make it a tad bit more thirsty.

BTW, Luckett, I watched your vids from the epic rides this past weekend. It looks like you guys had a blast on all of those rides. Great stuff!

I've already got a plan for norcal V, so as soon as it warms up a bit we'll be rollin' again.

Nice! If you'll have me, I may try to tag along. It's possible that your pace will be a bit too strong and I'll have to peel off, but who knows. I'm loving my lil DRZ but it's taking a bit of time to get used to it. Maybe a couple of track days would be a good idea....

You don't have to be fast. You just have to have decently sized balls and like beer. NorCal V probably wont be as gnarly as IV got. None of us had been on that rocky trail before, so we didn't know what to expect. We had one dirt noob and one guy hadn't riden dirt in a long time, but they sucked it up and made it thru just fine.

The pavement pace can be fast at the front, but everyone rides at their own pace and we wait at all turns for people to catch up.

Really, anyone could do one of these rides, but most people are just too much of a poosy to try...It's more about having a good time than riding a screaming pace.

Excellent! I don't think I'll hold you up too much, and I am always up for a good adventure. As for beer, I've been brewing for about 15 years, so I guess you could say I'm a fan :). I look forward to seeing the details of Epic V, and I hope it works with my schedule.

Looks like we may need to hook up a beer trailer to your bike. :teeth

Maybe I can beg the wife to drive a chase vehicle. Not bloody likely, though. I'm not opposed to strapping a small keg (2.5 gallons) to my luggage rack. :)

WR450F/SM

Her a re few shots of my 2006 WR450F/SM. It is street legal in Cali. It is faster than a DRZ400/SM (What isn't?) and just too much fun.

Lots of stuff changed as you can see.
