Posted speed limit vs safe speed

Mines is kinda like the southern part of Carmel Valley Road in sections.

Lets also not forget the opposite: Those lovely rural roads that They feel are so lightly traveled that they don't need to put up those yellow 'suggestion' signs. "Hey, if you can negotiate that downhill, decreasing radius hairpin, with the runnel of water at the apex, at 55MPH, more power to ya! Even more power to you if you know the road well enough to not be surprised by it!" :laughing

I wish more roads were like HWY1 between Stinson Beach and Jenner. For the vast majority of the stretch, the basic speed law applies, even though you have everything from 1/2 mile long straights to semi-twisty wooded sections. People tend to go the speed they feel comfortable and it all works. It would be perfect if they weren't so damn restrictive where they put dotted lines and/or people used turnouts. Still, it's quite nice to be able to wind through the wooded areas at twice the speed of a typical car without feeling threatened by a ticket.

Why the hell does grizzly peak need to be 30? Maybe (maybe) in the residential sections, but surely not on most of it. It doesn't seem that lowering the limit slows anyone down.

There isn't any sign on the side of the road that says what is OK and what isn't.

:thumbup Same applies to rear view mirrors. A rear view mirror can never tell you it's OK.

Hmmmm ... if they show there's no blinking red & blues behind you?

:teeth

I think ST meant, mirrors have limitations. So...those limitations have to be kept in mind, and extra "looking" done.
(when extra attention can be given there)

Well...those can go away...but the radio draws in the LEO up the road...That has a way of going bad.

The cops have been very cool about my overlooking the lights as long as I pull over for the siren.

Not quite. I think comparing it to Jamison and Alba would be a bit more in line. If they don't ring a bell, think Lucas Valley Road, but longer and dirty/gravelly in spots.

I think of Alba as much steeper and bumpier than any part of Mines.

On roads like Alba I put it in neutral and just coast most of the way down. I also use my rarely used rear brake.

I've never seen a speed limit sign I thought was "high".

Either have I.

The times I really pay attention to signs in the twistys are the 15MPH signs like the right hander going down the back on 9 at the bottom of the mountain. Or if there are any houses or business around.

(I've never ridden Mines :cry )

Ride in the rain. You'll find plenty of roads where the speed limits are faster than you'd want to ride.

Trouble is, they can only show what's not behind you in a narrow field of view. The blinking lights could still be there and not show up in your mirror. :teeth

Mines is interesting at a posted 45 mph, while roads like Redwood have a ridiculously slow 25 mph. Just curious who determined Mines rd. Ben Spies ? If anyone can hold a continuous 45 mph through Mines, your a much better rider then i.
lol guess I'm a much better rider than you, then! i clocked my average speed at 55mph last time i took decided to record that info :)

3 or 4 crashes later and i don't ride that road so much anymore. guess i might not be a much better rider after all :laughing
