Pre-1980 Westerns

Got any you like?

Once Upon A Time In The West is top notch, plus all the old Clint Eastwood flicks are fun.

Just watched Lawman last night, really enjoyed that one and it got surprisingly heavy at the end. Burt Lancaster was great.

I've seen some older John Wayne movies recently; The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Cowboys, Cahill, El Dorado aaaand The Spoilers. I've enjoyed his stuff quite a bit. Any John Wayne recommendations?

Certainly you have seen The Magnificent 7?

Continuing with The Duke, many people think, "The Searchers," is one of the best classic Westerns ever made.

"True Grit," is another classic you really need to see, especially for the fun of watching the remake, which is pretty damn good as far as Westerns go.

Hondo is kind of a MUST SEE for The Duke.

:thumbup Yeah, but what kind is that? A hilarious sendup of pre-1980 westerns, a kick in the teeth to racism, or Mel Brooks doing what he loves--getting away with as much as he can possibly get away with?
.

Yes:laughing

That's one I forgot about as some others mentioned. As an aside, it's been mentioned that McQueen and Brynner did not get along at all on the set.

According to insiders, McQueen played off of Brynner's apparent insecurities as to who was the star during filming, and McQueen attempted to "steal the scene" a couple of times, such as at the beginning when they're riding the hearse up to the graveyard, and McQueen, as he's loading the shotgun, shakes the shells before he loads them.

It wasn't in the script and irked Brynner.

Also, at first, Brynner's assigned revolver had a 4-5/8" barrel, and McQueen had a 7-1/2" barreled Colt.

Brynner complained and as you can see in the film both of them carry the 7-1/2" barreled guns.:laughing

Dances With Wolves
Pre-1980s...

Dances with Wolves...the question wasn't which movie would you play if you had someone tied to a chair and didn't like them.

Kevin Costner’s best acting was as the dead guy in “The Big Chill”.

Having said that, I do really enjoy “Bull Durham”, but it’s in spite of him.

He's not bad. For Love of the Game was good, so was Field of Dreams, Tin Cup and especially A Perfect World.

Anyway, I compiled a list in the first post. Didn't want to include the more recent westerns just because they're more popular and we've all seen 'em.

Ulzana's Raid and Will Penny were pretty good. Burt Reynolds was in The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing. I had a thing for Sarah Miles.

Funny, I had a thing for her too, right thru to “Hope and Glory”... :laughing

(Julie Christie & Diana Rigg were the rest of trinity of beautiful English actresses of the 60’s)

Costner might be like Gary Cooper, an actor with a limited range but a major star and one of the top moneymakers in Hollywood history. I like to watch Costner movies, even Postman, WW and DWW.

Lots of popular actors without a lot of range. They still have something people identify with. Stoic seems to work for westerns.

I always thought Cooper was more comparable to Eastwood.

I think of Eastwood as being more menacing, a lot more rage and violence just under the skin. Cooper and Costner don't bring that. When they're good guys, they seem motivated by doing the right thing, hero not antihero.

Costner and Eastwood played similar characters in Open Range and Pale Rider, men with violent pasts forced to call on that rage again. Eastwood gave the more powerful performance by far. At the end, I felt that Costner was going to settle down with the girl and be alright. I felt that Eastwood was a tormented figure that was never going to be alright.

It's a TV show, but they have a marathon of The Rifleman, every Sat & Sun on DirecTV. I love frontier justice. With a Winchester. :sniper
