I know these are common for off road, but, anyone find a pair that works for street / touring? I already wear bike shorts on longer rides to keep monkey butt at bay and avoid / minimize saddle sores. Seems there are some options that have a chamois along with hip and maybe tailbone padding. Considering my gear setup and the new airbag jacket I am getting, the hips are the only thing left unprotected so I figure even a little CE-1 padding is better than nothing. Anyone got a pair they love?

I've ridden with padded bike shorts. Ugh. Either the seat is comfortable or it isn't.

I know all those iron butters use either a wood bead thang or some kind of sheepskin thing. After last ride, we were going to take the car for a long jaunt. Bought a sheepskin and slapped it on the driver's seat.

Great! Next will be on the motorcycle. You could test drive one and report back. ;)

Only problem with those is...rain. And you are going to Oregon. Frogg Toggs might be a better purchase.

This is up to you, but when I motorcycle, I wear pants instead of shorts... bwhahaha

From all my bicycling, about 10 hours a week, I have a dozen shorts, but the last time I used a set, I took one with a rough elastic hem. After a 15 hour day, I ended up with a bad blister on my thigh.

I don't have a recommendation for protective bicycle shorts. I'm sure they make them, or at least intended for the MX crowd. It's a double issue of a comfortable saddle pad which will immediately affect you, vs the protective bone pads which you won't utilize if you don't crash.

If it was me, I would continue to use one of my bike shorts and then seek out external pads, possibly sewn into the pants. If I didn't have 10 shorts, I suppose any quality brand will be comfortable in the saddle.

No experience with these. I wear vented pants.

I would like a set of these for snowboarding.

I have a Klim combat briefs. I only wear them when whatever I'm wearing doesn't have adequate hip armor. I've crashed on my hips twice and it's not fun. But it does act as a padded shorts also.

Good info folks, thanks! Those Bohn pants look pretty appealing as I could replace all the CE-1 stuff in my riding pants with CE-2. The knee / shin pads in the pants I have are pretty good but the hip pads are useless, just a thin piece of foam. I've had enough lower energy crashes on mountain bikes to know that landing on your hips hurts.

I like my MotoSkiveez padded shorts a lot. Some people I know say they get monkeybutt with them but I haven't experienced that. When I don't have pads in the pants I'm wearing I wear my Troy Lee ones because they have extra hip pads.

Those look nice - like the trifold hat too

I have a pair of cycle gear padded shorts that are ok but rarely wear them as I like natural fibers. I use Aerostitch hip pads in my revit pants, they have Velcro that makes it easy to attach to the waistband. Waiting for the air shorts to develop.

I have a pair of those. Haven’t worn them in a decade but they seemed great for dual sporting

I have three different pairs of armoured shorts:

  1. Forcefield Action Pro (seem to have been superseded by the Boom shorts): by far the most protective with CE Level 2 armour, but no chamois pad. Comfortable if you get the size right (which is a challenge), but the armour is so thick that they may not fit your current pants.
  2. Leatt 3DF 4.0 shorts: least protective, but they have a chamois pad. Comfortable, thin enough that they present no fitting problems with pants, but they're tight, limiting mobility somewhat.
  3. Dainese Hard shorts: these are my favourites; the fabric is just an open netting so you have to wear something underneath, but they provide good protection, they're comfortable, and do not inhibit mobility. They're bulkier than the Leatt, but they fit under my off-road Klim pants without problems; doubtful whether they would fit under my leathers, but have never tried them.

Bought a pair from Amazon. Can't recall what brand it was anymore but it is padded. Not as comfortable as just wearing pants but tolerable and some protection is better than none.

They make football griddle pads that are pull on similar to what dirt riders would wear. Less need for the thigh pads that protect the quads but the tailbone pad could come into play.

Assumed economy of scale, more football players, would make them cheaper? Appears there are plenty of options with more optimal placement for riders.

Nevermind. ;)

I had no idea these things were a thing.

@ Wanker Air shorts :laughing
