Just a friendly reminder that the "Click It Or Ticket" campaign kicked off yesterday. You can expect zero tolerance enforcement throughout the state. While most of us will be on two wheels, be sure to buckle up when in the cage.

You have been warned.

I have zero tolerence of anyone in the car in which I am driving to not have their seatbelts secure before we motor onward.

Just because I don't like outside agencies trying to dictate how local law enforcement does its job, anyone I stop for a seatbelt violation this month gets a warning; or maybe I just won't make any stops for seatbelts.

As a driver, I'm sure I get a ticket for not buckling up. What's the dealio for my passengers- do they get the ticket, me or both? Different if the passenger is a minor?

Passengers age 16 years and older can get their own citation for not being buckled. See 27315(e) VC.

You as the driver are responsible for making sure everyone in your vehicle is buckled up while you are driving. See 27315(d) VC.

So If I stop you because I see your adult passenger is not wearing his/her seatbelt, I can write you a ticket for 27315(d) AND your passenger for 27315(e) VC and walk away with two cites from the one stop.

If the unbelted or unsecured passenger is under age 16 then it changes a bit. If the parent is in the vehicle, even if the parent is not driving, they get the citation. See 27360(a) and (b), as well as 27360.5(a) and (b) VC.

Why not start giving tickets for using cell phones? When does that kick in...I can't wait.

Does that count as a Hat Trick- primary stop violation, then scratching the driver and the parent for the seat belt? Another toaster, on the way!

Working my way up to the Amana microwave.

Is your dept getting extra funding this month for added seatbelt enforcement? If it is, and your dept doesn't produce numbers, you may lose that money in the future. I know our office will see some of that money being used as OT. I like OT...

Actually it’s a formula used with different factors, not just how many seatbelt tickets were written. We wrote the most our department ever has for the click-it-or ticket campaign last year and we got a third of the amount of grant money this year. Partly because our enforcement number were up and our injury/fatal collision were down.

What????!!!!

That flies in the face of all the "revenue generation" and "enforcement reduces accidents" thinking everywhere. Nice try...:shocker

It sure screwed my revenue generation. I got full 10 hours shifts last year writing seatbelts, only 4 hour blocks this year. Not even worth wasting a day for 4 hours. I signed up for none. :thumbdown

After ~7 seatbelt tickets since 1995 I can honestly say I buckle up every time I get in the car. :thumbup

fixed...after 1 wreck with no seatbelt i promise that you will wear it.. good job on buckling up!

i was in a bad accident with no seatbelt as a kid. it took me years to feel safe riding in a vehicle again. if i fell asleep while riding shotgun i would often wake up from a nightmare crash. 6 months after the accident i was in another accident this time wearing seatbelts. it was in the same truck that had been rebuilt from the ground up and had only been painted 2 days before. the truck was totalled but we didn't even have a scratch. i am a believer now.
