Pyramid Brewery in Berkeley lays off employees

Damn, that's my favorite beer. Are they shutting for good or just moving the plant out of State?

So far just closing the brewery "temporarily". The company has not offered ANY severance package yet. Just the final checks.

Chicks like putting dicks in their mouth too, doesn't mean the rest of us need to do it......:laughing

Hemper Fly.

Cool. Why would anyone put a beer production facility in California, much less Bezerkly?

it's not like they're using toxic chemicals or something dangerous. brewing beer is essentially a baking process.

california has some of the best small brewers in the country, several of which are pushing the definition of "small" due to their success.

why brew in CA? berkeley in particular? because that's where the beer snob audience is and fresh beer is where it's at.

a better question to me, is: why did the employees think unionizing in a super liberal town, within an industry famous for irreverence and pride in giving the finger to the man, was a good idea?

The "contamination" issue is a curious angle. The new story says that employees agreed there was a contamination problem. Did someone sabotage the beer, or just poor QC?

Egyptian yeast is SO 1990's. :x

They closed their place in Sac a year or so ago. Methinks it's more due to declining sales, than anything else.

I hate it when I agree with you, but you are spot on. Pyramid :thumbdown

The food was pretty mediocre too. Always reminded me of a chain restaurant, like Chili's or Friday's.

I thought they had a nice salmon sandwich but I haven't been there in years so I might be thinking of somewhere else. And I don't drink so what the hell was I doing at a brewery???

Actually it's less than that. I love private sector unions. Public sector unions are absolutely destroying the cities. When a city owes more than 60% of it's budget to unions and their retirees, there's something seriously wrong.

This.

My guess would be due to an acquisition. I.E. Pyramid Brewery was acquired by Cerveceria Costa Rica, a unit of the Costa Rican company Florida Ice & Farm Co. If the Property and equipment were already fully depreciated i.e owned outright the cost to produce beer in Berkley is primarily supplies and labor. Where as labor may be costly in CA, it most likely does not exceed the cost of a new building and equipment elsewhere. So to answer your question... it is possible due to circumstances that it was cheaper to produce it in Berkly compared to somewhere else.

The joint was closed as retaliation, but not to the union. Typically, a business that starts losing money takes steps quickly to end the hemorrhage.

This. They have other breweries and own the brand. No reason to bleed cash in Berkeley any more.

Went to the SaveMart in Truckee yesterday. Wanted wheat beer. Reached for Pyramid but stopped. Remembered this thread. Found something by Roscoe's Hop House. Not bad, too. :twofinger
