Question on 'cop warning'

To the people who seem to think two sportbikes going 80 mph on Skyline is "just having some fun", I ask this - what do you think about sports cars going 80 mph on Skyline?

I think it's kinda slow, but then, sometimes I'm just not in that fast mode you know?

I'll try to keep it above 80 just for you, when I'm there in my car, but the view is nice, so I can't promise that I won't slow down to 80 to do some sightseeing...

What I really think is that absolute speed is meaningless, it's each rider choosing to ride within their abilities, and with some room for error, or choosing to throw caution to the wind.

At the end of the day, if I hurt someone doing what I do...it's on me. It's unlikely the state would let me just walk away if I did, but even if the state, and the victim's family did, I would still have to be able to live with myself. Some people I guess can BS themselves easily, I cannot. It's important enough to me to not hurt someone fucking around that I'm willing to crash badly to avoid it...but I find just being prudent and careful about speeding like a maniac to have worked well so far. In fact, far better than I ever would have thought.

In fact it's worked so well that the only way that I can possibly see traffic deaths and injuries being reduced is if people start wanting to be more careful.

Judging by what I see while commuting, that isn't going to happen.

40,000 deaths a year on the roads...people just don't care. And when they do, they think Big Brother is the one to save them? NO!!! IT'S YOU!!!!! :mad:mad:mad:mad:mad:mad:mad:mad:mad:mad:mad:mad

As far as communicating to other moto riders? Always a good thing. Better safe than sorry, X2 at elevated speeds.

Probably would have done the same. And if they were really going that fast, it's too fast for that road. Too many cars and driveways and the like.

Agree'd. I'm extremely happy when "cagers" or other moto's flash or "tap wave" for me. I do the same every possible chance.

OP: At the very least, you slowed them down and made them aware. YOU don't know exactly where that Ambulance and LEO were heading. Damn sure neither did they. That Ambulance and LEO cruiser could have been parked around a blind corner (not likely with skyline, in too many places...) but could non the less be like that on any of the road up in that area.

Mods: No offense, if your going to tell someone their reply to Traq is in violation of the TOS. I believe Traq's statement at that point could also be thought of as Baiting. Jus' sayin..... :teeth

I agree with this, even though this may be an unpopular position in a motorcycle forum. OK, maybe 80 is not exactly "double" the speed limit on Skyline, and maybe they were not exactly going 80, but you know what we're talking about here - reckless speed. To the people who seem to think two sportbikes going 80 mph on Skyline is "just having some fun", I ask this - what do you think about sports cars going 80 mph on Skyline?

I feel comfortable with cars doing 80 (or above) up on skyline, with the same stipulations that hold true for motorcycles.

Please don't confuse Reckless driving with Speeding - the meanings are very different, as are the punishments.

Really? Your tail lights are on with your low beams. and when you go from low beams to high beams nothing changes but your headlights, your tail lights remain the same. Your brake lights don't come on, unless you put your brakes on (which your not doing here).

You do have low and high beams in your headlights don't you? This has nothing to do with "running lights".

if i see a cop in the day light and i go to flash someone i have to turn on my headlights which will turn on my tail lights and they will know i flashed someone or turned on my headlights for some reason

Most cars today have high beam flashers on the turn signal stalk. They flash only the high beams and do not trigger your tail lights.

why worry it's not illegal.

But ... helmet taps in a cage? Headlights are the best they got.

:teeth

Actually I make it a point to use moto signals to bikes when I'm driving...that way they might know that I'm a rider too, and despite being on four wheels at the moment, that I care about them. Maybe I'm weird.

Once a Cop stuck his arm out his window, with five digits extended and then made a fist and extended five digits again. I thought that was pretty cool, way of saying 55.

Normally I won't look at a driver of an on-coming vehicle, so if they are doing a head tap or something, I'd miss it. Flash the headlights, I'll see.
The very fact they did give me a warning, I'll think..
.Cool that cager, probably is a biker.

Hey, whatever happened to the left hand held down low, palm open, down and horizontal, with a movement down and up to signify slowing down because of whatever reason? Doesn't anyone use that signal anymore? Or am I too old?
always be either/or helmet tap or palm down motion since I been riding. I think the hemet tap is most popular.

a more "hidden" helmet tap is on side of the helmet, not the top.

Years ago, on a Berryessa group ride, another guy and I were a minute or two ahead of the main group when we passed a LEO hiding down a side street watching for speeders (we were not speeding at the time). So we pulled over, dismounted, and stood there in plain sight of the officer giving helmet taps to the rest of the group as they went by. :laughing

No, he didn't do anything to us.

Either that or you left a blinker on. :laughing

No I didn't leave a blinker on. It was in your area though, on the freeway coming back from Fairfield. about 20 years ago.

Yeah, but in that case he was saying he wanted to squeeze something...

Doubtful...I'm built like a 12 y.o. boy--good for aerodynamics, not so great for having attractive squishy parts. And, no, there will be no pictures to prove it.

With a full face helmet/dark face shield, and full leathers, we all look pretty much the same.

I gotta tell this story, now.

Coming North out of San Jose (that would be 101 I guess) and splitting off to go Fremont/Hayward/Oakland, the traffic got real thick. I worked through that and broke free. Oh and I'm on My Harley FXRSport. About at the exit to Fremont I get lights and siren. I'm thinkin "Ya gotta be kidding" as I pull over and take off my helmet as the cop is standing next to me. He goes into this spastic fit and starts stuttering. I'm thinking WTF? is wrong with this guy? Then....it hits me, I have a Blond pony tail, he expected to be talkin to a girl.
