Questions about a SV650 Project bike

I recently got a stock SV650S and for some god awful reason I've got this urge to rip it apart and convert it. More or less going to turn this into a project bike that'll amuse me for however long it takes for me to accomplish this task. I tried looking around in the garage, but for some reason I couldn't find a thing. Guess my search fu sucks.

I figure I'm just going to throw a few ideas out there and see if they're viable options as I plan to use the SV650 for commuting and a bit of play on the weekends.

With a little research online I've found a few things that can be done on a mechanical level, part swapping for durability and performance. Things of that nature that are pretty self explanitory, though in that I'm not sure if they would be street legal. Last thing I need is to be zipping to work, pulled over by an officer and show up late for a deposition.

List of things that look like fun:

GSXR Front end Swap - I know I'll need to snag new bearings, the front end of a GSXR and maybe throttle cables as I think the stock ones are longer and may snag (Haven't measured, kinda eyeballing). I think I'll have to get a new Speedometer and convert an existing aftermarket piece onto the GSXR front end. (I think I'll have to CL,Ebay or Salvage dive for some of these parts. Though if anyone knows where I can get them for cheap, I'd appreciate it!)

Removal of passenger seat into something else? - Thinking of adding a removeable hard bag or finding a kit that'll smooth it out. I don't plan on ever having a passenger when I ride the SV, but if by some odd thing happens and I do decide to do that. It'd be nice if the swap would be an easy thing to switch around.

Tank Bag - Probably something that'll convert into a backpack or a briefcase thingymajigger for when I have to take more crap with me to work or on a trip. Might do this? I don't know, just spewing random ideas.

Reduce weight - I'd like to reduce weight and I'm not really sure on how to go about on doing this. Sure the SV is light at 380 lbs wet? Mostly doing this reduction for trailer/hauling purposes and I'm sure a little less weight wouldn't be a bad thing when it comes to handling.

Any ideas on how long this'll take me to complete? That is if I get all the parts I need at the same time and perhaps have a friend or two help me? Garage space is kind of a premium and I think I'd only be able to tinker/construct on the weekends. Granted in this I've never really worked on a cycle before, I only have mechanical knowledge of the basics for vehicle maintaince that I learned at an autoshop and whatever else I learned from building my Jeep and other family/friend vehicles I worked upon.

I've got a fair amount of tools and access to more if I pull the right strings, but would I need any specialized tools for this project?

The SV650S looks like a fun platform to frankenstein, but at the same time I'd like to keep it as street legal and safe as possible. Any tips and ideas would be greetly appreciated as I think I'm about to dive into something that may be a spot out of my league but by damn am I going to do this.

Zoran says................. OTFP :laughing

Anyways, hope your talking about the "SV650S" and not the naked version. If the latter, it is more difficult to do the GSXR front end conversion.

I wouldn't worry about weight, the SV is light and flickable enough as it is.

You can always get a rear seat cowl and rid of the rear seat.

There are tons of tank bag and other luggage that can be fitted to an SV. Road Rider or Cycle Gear are good places to start.

Checking the paperwork its an SV650S , not to knowledgeable when it comes to the SV's. Though I'd like to think I'm learning as quickly as possible.

I know I'm going to feel a bit dumb, as I probably should know what OTFP means, but. . . I'm lost, whats it mean again? :laughing

Appreciate the heads up on where to snag the bags and about the weight, wasn't so sure and now that you mention it. I think its pretty much fine as is. I'll also definitely look into the cowl options.

As for the bearings for the GSXR front end swap. When or if your ready for it i have fresh bearings for you. Paypal (TWF) Zoran and PM me with your address.

otfp= open throttle facking poosey

I have a set of 07 gsxr 750 forks, lower triple, calipers and i think the master cyl
if you're interested

Awesome, I'll definitely hit you and Zoran up when I start this build.

Appreciate the translation on the abbreviation, I knew I heard it around here somewhere. Just not as the abbrev (I'm susceptible to brain farts). I'd be interested in those parts, would you mind PM'ing me with the individual prices and what not?

Also, spoke to some of my family and friends. They're pretty much telling me to snag some frame sliders as that'll save me some cash along the way if something unfortunate were to happen. Any recommendations on those?

You might also take a look at Tygaboy's carbon fiber project and look at the finished bike pics for ideas. He did a spectacular job modding his SV.

I'll look into that, can't go wrong with other ideas and who knows. I might change a few of mine as I'm basically still in the idea stage of my build.

Did more research and I'm thinking about snagging these as well.

- Renegade dual hi-mount titanium exhaust system

- Werkes Fender Eliminator Kit

- Pyramid Plastic seat cowl

Probably going to paint the SV in a matte black, though the frame is matte black as well. Was wondering if I'd be able to switch out the black frame with an older silver frame? Like a 04 model. Not sure if everything will slide into place if I use an older frame/subframe.

go to moto photos forum, there is about 100 pages of sv's :)

Thanks Zoran! Knew I was missing something.

I think I know what I'll do for my project now after looking through a majority of the photo forum and speaking to family over dinner, I'll have to fabricate a few pieces to get the SV I'm aiming for. With hopes I'll have her done sooner then later!

Dave Wong's old SV was the best SV I've ridden, seen, or owned... makes my other SV look like a pile

damn that's a hot bike

I take it there isn't much stock in the engine?

Most of the engine is stock, just has cams, pistons, expensive valve job, head work, and probably a balanced crank. Oh, and flatslides.

I was assuming that at 85whp it would need a new crank

Ok, I think I've "finally" figured out how I'm going to go about putting the SV together. The subframe was a bit messed up so I'll either go with another SV subframe taken from a Salvage Yard and just make my own rear fairing on top or go with a Ducati Monster subframe that I'll have to modify to fit and if my calculations/diagrams are right I'll be able to fit a license plate and all that rear stuffage correctly. Though at the moment its just a bunch of theory placed down in the computer and scraps of oily paper.

For the front I'll be doing a GXSR Front swap with bearings, probably go with either 600/750 GSXR Front end with the GSXR1000 Master Cylinder. Going to definitely have to hit up Zoran for the bearings.

I think I'll have a problem with the Speedo, so I may have outsource to have that situated. Anyone know anyone whose got a good grasp on Speedo installs and all that? I really don't trust myself with it.

I'm still going to go with the Renegade dual high mounts as I love the sound, outside of that I'll snag frame sliders and pick up an improvement to the shocks

Plan to remove most of the fairings and perhaps switch out the lamp for either a large single or a dual placed side by side.

Paint job with probably be powder coated in either White or Matte Black spray, depends on my mood after I've gotten the SV together and ridden her for a bit.

I think the project should come along nicely and once I'm able to get all those parts, it shouldn't take me to long to build.

As an SV owner for a few years now, i have always had a huge problem with everyone saying that teh SV suspensions sucks. I am a bigger guy and have never had an issue with my suspension. Manly cause I have my suspension dialed in where it needs to be.

If all of you are that worried about you front suspension...change out the springs. You will save a lot of money in the long run.

I must have missed the part where people were talking shit about the stock front end...I did read the title of the thread about this being a project bike. Additionally, selling the stock front end will pay for a bling gsxr front end.
