is anyone doing this kind of stuff like taking x-rays and stuff?
i hear it has the potential to be a good job with minimal schooling...

anyone know where to go to school for stuff like this?

Check the life expectancy for various medical professions. While modern machines are a lot better than 30 years ago, X-ray is still unhealthy.

yeah already read em i was doing industrial x-rays which were very dangerous somewhere around getting about 10-12 mr/hr

Its gonna be a step for me pretty soon. Im back in school taking some pre-req's. Most schools will give you an associates and then you take your accreditation tests.

Theres also a new field called Radiologist Assistant, which is kinda like a physician's assistant in that you do some of the stuff the radiologist does sans the reading of the xrays/etc. It pays at least 25-30% better than a rad-tech. The big drawback of it is that since you work under the radiologists license they watch you like a hawk.

Ill be goin to a combination of schools probably. Loma Linda University will be one of em, and its probably the most well known Allied Health uni in California if im not mistaken.

so its like just radiology course at a community college?

no, i dont know any colleges in my area that do radiology courses, though im sure theres some in L.A. The pre-req's im taking are all science classes like anatomy and physiology and alot of chem and bio classes to transfer to Loma Linda.

"Good jobs with minimal schooling" is a myth.

Either it's dangerous, disgusting (thus not good), or predicated on some form of official theft (Teamsters getting paid $50/hr to drive a truck a Mexican could drive for $5/hr).

If there's a disproportion between the education required for radiological techs and their pay, know that in a few years there won't be once everyone figures it out and gluts the market with excess labor supply.

You're better off studying hard to be an engineer or doctor or something else with a stable career path.

ya Aluisious right. which is why its only gonna be a step for me to:
A- Get my hospital experience in, which is a pre-req for my physician's assistant program
B- Have a good job I can do on the weekend (working at imaging centers) to pay the bills while i go to school during the week for my didactic period.

Its about 6 years to go for me.

There's a 24-month Radiology program here in the hospital I work at.

PDF file may give you an idea what needs to be done. I was also thinking about going into the program since even though it may take 4-6yrs total to obtain, the money you'll be earning is well worth it. There is a wide range of jobs you can pursue once you finish the program.

Right now it's very difficult to get hired on because most hospitals are no longer in need of rad techs. Most programs have long wait lists, just like nursing. Its pretty cyclical though- 5 years from now they might be short again and start hiring/recruiting like crazy like they were a few years ago. If you're jsut starting now, you missed the boat.
