I was born in the 60's. I was born in the north central US and raised to call adults Mr / Mrs <last name>. My family moved to the south when I was 8yrs old. Adults were addressed Miss / Mister <first name>. Now kids from 6-18 are addressing me by my first name. What. The. Fuck.

I know it's not the kids, it's the parents. What. The. Fuck.

My kids were raised to address adults as Miss and Mister. When my kid addresses an adult as 'Miss', and that adult tells them "Just call me by my first name." Yeah, you telling my kid that it's OK to ignore what I tell them to do....that's a special kind of bullshit. Noted.

Do you want others kids to call you by your last name, while other parents want your kids to call them by their first names?

When I was married, all the neighborhood kids called all the neighborhood parents by their first names...but not me.
I was Mr. Meandad, no exceptions across the board. :laughing
None of those kids ever called me Kevin.

I was always out in the garage and they'd come by and ask me to fix their bikes and I would; then I'd tell them to get the hell out of my garage and go tell their dads to buy some damn tools. :laughing

I think they're saying it's ok if the children address them casually; not that your children can ignore your teachings.

"We're a close family, little Bobby. You can call me Steve instead of Mr. Nerolly."

Is different than

"Oh you can have a soda at 9:00pm and we just won't tell your dad."

A kid calling me by my first name puts me on the same level as him.
It’s the whole respect your elders thing.

In the daycare the kids call me Tito Ed. I’m fine with that and so are they.

My piers would still call my father Mr Kobza when they were in their 50’s. I always found that very respectful….. and cool.

I am far removed from teens or kids addressing me at all and My own blood calls me my Grandpa nickname GP.

Thinking hard when it was a child saying Dennis.
I can’t.

Yes Sir- Yes Mamn!
Mr. Mrs. And Miss!
:thumbup

If parents said to call them by their first name it was awkward.

I'm having a hard time seeing this as a problem. As long as the kids respect that individuals might want to be addressed in different ways, who cares? Customs change. Deal with it.

It's about the missing Mister / Miss, not whether it's first or last name. Mr. Arnold, or Mr. Tim. Either one works. I don't want kids addressing me as 'Tim'.

On more than one occasion:
"My parents told me to use 'Miss <first name>."
"No, just call me by my first name"

Obviously several people care and I understand why.
Sure customs change and not all are for the good Mr. Chris. :teeth

At that point parental teachings have had their desired effect, and real-world manners include using one's preferred name?

:dunno

When I was a kid we learned to choose our words very carefully... at least when dad was around. 🤐

I think Mr and Miss/Mrs is fine. They do that at school. (or some schools don't teach to address the teachers using Mr/Ms?~?!?)

I got addressed as Mr a few times when I was helping out or chaperoning. By teachers and kids. It felt good / fine.

that point parental teachings

none of which compares to what a young girl asked me on the transit while on a school trip once. "So how much money do you make?"

I can't decide if I'm lucky she switched to another school -- with her dad who wasn't able to speak much to me (I presume full of bank accounts or stock...) I see a bright a business person, banker or a lawyer, future for her.

(being addressed only first name hasn't happened, I think. Or maybe I forgot)

I find it irritating when saying "excuse me miss" only to hit with a nasty "I'TS MIZ!", and the "I'M NOT A MADAM, DONT CAll ME MAM!. Jesus, some people look real hard to be offended. Those were the proper respectful addresses when I was a kid. Miss if you didn't know. Mam as a gesture of respect.

I grew up saying Mr/Mrs last name. Same with my kids, although it seems these days some teachers prefer to be called Mr/Mrs first name.

Now, when my own kids call me by my first name we got a problem :laughing especially when they are correcting me...I'm fairly confident this only happens at home :teeth

It's hard to introduce myself as Mr. last name to kids but I do try.

Growing up we had a neighbor named Pete Peterson. I called him Pete once in front of my dad... big mistake! I just never talked to, or about, the guy again. :laughing

Maybe the kids (and adults) are worried about saying Mister/Sir and it’s not the right pronoun?

Growing up in Louisiana it was always Mr. <firstname> or Ms. <firstname> for all adults. "Mr. <lastname>" was reserved for formalities and strangers.
