Rear Shock Preload Adjustment?

I've done this plenty of times before but it's been a while and just wanted to see if there's a better way these days.

I've got a Ktech Razor R shock on an FZ07. It has one pinch ring on top of the spring (no lock ring) and one pinch ring on the bottom of the spring (again, no lock ring). I'm planning on unloading the shock by jacking up the bike, cleaning the threads, and loosening the pinch bolt(s). Is the best tool the Ktech spanner? The last time I did this with the shock manufacturer's spanner on a different brand shock, I ended up mushrooming the preload collars. I want to avoid that. And no way am I going to use a hammer and punch. Any tricks/tools out there for this old dog?

I've been using something like this (or possibly this exact one, can't remember) for several years now. It has been much easier than the single sided sock preload adjuster tools. It might be worth giving this a try. I really enjoy the fact that this one is a pliers so it grabs on both sides as tight as you like.

I believe those Ktech Razor spring pre-load collars have a "set screw" keeping them from moving! If you don't loosen that first you might not be able to move the spring adjustment collar and/or will damage the threads on the shock!

Yep, that's absolutely correct. They are split style collars with a "pinch" bolt that holds them tight.
