Recycling Oil: getting rid of the empty bottles?

I just moved to a new house. I had a ton of "empty" oil containers, along with a recycle bin full of typical recyclables. When I pulled my recycle can back to the side of the house, I notice 2 quart oil bottles still in the bottom, lids off. And about an inch of loose oil in the bottom. Apparently, the recycle dude did not like the fact I was recycling oil containers, took the lids off, and dumped the remaining oil into the bottom of the can to teach me a lesson.

How is that teaching YOU a lesson? He's the dumbass who's going to have to pick up that shit. If it really was the garbage man who did it, I don't think what he did would be looked up on kindly by his supervisor.

I use reusable containers, then I reuse them.

Our backyard fire pit works great for burning the bottles.

Hello BAAQMD? The Shell Refinery is making some stinky smells this evening...:laughing

I received a call back last night from California Waste Solutions and she said specifically that you do NOT put empty oil containers in the recycling bin. If the bottles are totally empty then you must put them in the brown garbage bin since they cannot/won't be able to recycle the oil contaminated empties.

You go to the shop and buy oil and have them fill up your old containers?

What I'm talking about is what do you do with the old containers that you bought the oil in in the first place.

The solution straight from CA Waste Solutions is to put the empties in the brown trash bin once you have recycled the used oil separately.

Not a total answer,,, but if you purchase the oil in 1 gallon or 4 liter size containers, it reduces the number of bottles you have to deal with. A number of good quality motorcycle oils are available in those set ups.

Yep, that is exactly what I normally/most commonly do already. Damn big bikes that take almost 4 liters....

I buy a large jug of Rotella and once the jug is used up I fill it back up with the old oil and put a bunch of XXX's on it so I don't accidentally top off a bike with old oil. :thumbup

I use a cheap (non-carb approved) 5 gallon fuel jug, they never want to give it back. I have to ask for it.... or they ask me if I want it back.

Now I just put the used oil in containers next to the recycling bin on pick up day, much easier. Still have 5 gallons in the fuel jug, too lazy to take it down.

I left out my filled oil drain container by the side of my building overnight, and it disappeared... I thought somebody stole it. But now that I think of it, I bet the trash guys who came by that night took it (in SF). Bummer... now I have to get a new drain container :-(

I agree. He made it known that I left "not completely empty" oil containers in the can. I was the one who cleaned out the can because I felt terrible I somehow left it in there. I also had people helping me move in, so family may have accidentally put the containers in.

It did not teach me anything, because I would never do it on purpose. He tried though. I think.

Exactly one day after requesting the kit it arrived! Two empty milk jugs and a plastic bag.....remind me again why I can't just leave the oil out in the containers it came in in the first place?

The first time I requested recycle containers for used oil I got shiny new containers as well. After that, they've all been used ones. :dunno

Walmart has big 12 quart recycling containers for cheap, just look in the oil section.

My local O'Reilly took the container the last few times I dropped off oil there. I did put my used oil in the jug though if that makes a difference.
