Red Light Camera Ticket Thread!

Redflex had the contract with the City of Santa Maria. There were numerous complaints about bogus tickets (which were right about $500), and finally, if my memory can be trusted, someone on city staff got a ticket in the mail. The city lost a whole buttload of money, a whole bunch tickets got tossed out of court, and I think they had to refund a bunch of fines to people that just paid them or lost in court previously. And sued Reflex.

Sweet.

My friend says someone is supposed to review and sign off on all red light tickets but that's clearly BS...

I google around. Never happened.

Man, you need to work on your Google skills. This article came up pretty quickly:

According to the story, it wasn't RedFlex, it was a company called Nestor, and the city dropped the program because of lukewarm effect and protests from locals, plus Nestor went bankrupt and the company that purchased its assets cancelled the contract with the city. I didn't see any mention of a city councilman getting a ticket.

I didn't Google it, I went froM memory. The story was that a city staff member got a ticket, that until that happened, they dididn't believe anyone when they said their ticket was bogus.

My apologies for being a rumor monger. I should have Googled it.

for once, short & to the point.

My son got a red light ticket when the guy next to him ran the light (dual turn-lanes.) We called City of San Leandro & complained, pointing out the pic showing our car sitting behind the line (hadn't started yet), AND the other guy running the light.

Then they sent a mail after that one phone call stating the "infraction had been cleared" & we should not pay a fine as "It's been dismissed."

:thumbup :cool

It's occurred to me for some time that yellow light times have been shortened. I didn't realize California has a law for minimum yellow light times (3.6 seconds). I wonder if a person who got a red light camera violation could show the yellow was under the 3.6 second minimum; if that could be used to contest the ticket? From the article...

In a 2015 ruling, a California appeals court voided a challenged ticket because the yellow light time had been shortened beyond the 3.6-second minimum. That ruling opens the door for thousands of tickets across the Golden State to be voided on similar grounds.

Here's a little more on the topic of yellow light times...

What is the Proper Length for a Yellow Light?

The length of the yellow light cannot be just arbitrary. The California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (“MUTCD”), prescribes uniform standards for all official traffic control devices in California and the MUTCD section 4D-10 and Table 4D-102(CA), sets forth the minimum time for traffic signal yellow light change intervals. Section 4D-10 also provides that the time for a yellow light change interval may be increased through field review and appropriate judgment of the local agency. The MUTCD is very clear that increasing the yellow light interval above the minimum prescribed in the same section is an option and in no manner a requirement. Decreasing the yellow light interval below the minimum however, is not an option.

• If the posted speed limit is 25 (or less) mph the minimum yellow interval is 3.0 seconds (this includes both right and left hand turns).
* If the posted speed limit is 35 mph the minimum yellow interval is 3.6 seconds.
• If the posted speed limit is 45 mph the minimum yellow interval is 4.3 seconds.

Everything I have ever ridden was easily capable (or grossly capable) of exceeding any speed limit I have ever encountered.

Somehow, though I have never gotten a speeding ticket while riding (no jinx). Keep reasonable, never have to "fight" a ticket.

One of the cities in greater Phoenix got sued because the traffic engineer shortened the yellow and violated the standard, to create more red light tickets. That was the beginning of the end of all red light cameras in Az.
All about greed, not safety.

A lot of words with not much said. I especially liked the part where you said don't let the officer talk, if you have seen hundreds of traffic cases you would know the officer goes first. Sounds like your 3 out of 4 wins were tbwd, cool. Btw, criminal judges HATE hearing traffic trials, good luck with that move

Gabe, if you were just beating the "everybody on a moto speeds" drum here on BARF, I would have felt no need to post.

However, *you* do it in publications. In public, by definition.

Not everybody who rides also speeds. To write otherwise is inaccurate and irresponsible.

Don't paint all riders with your personal "fuck the law" brush. We won't paint you with our "rides to slow" one.
