remember those davis students who got famously pepper sprayed? $1 million richer now

Word, but note that just because you get a heads up on something, it doesn't mean the following actions are okay. Also, just saying words 'you're breaking the law', doesn't actually mean you're breaking the law.

Encircling/entrapping police officers, and holding them hostage until the student demands are met, is legal these days?

You pay admission to amusement parks too... does that mean you have the right to go ANYWHERE on the property, even if told it's off limits? How about if you get unruly, and start affecting/involving others? Do they have NO legal right to have you removed?

What a crock of bile.

No it wasn't.

They protest an increase in tuition and then sue the university which will exacerbate the problem they were protesting about.

OMG, I can't believe I am arguing about this.:rolleyes

So then nothing should be protested ever? Because, by your logic, protesting will either A. Make the problem worse or B. Make the problem worser.

Oh yes, the battle-hardened squads of officers were clearly outgunned and held hostage by a bunch Nietzsche-reading eggheads.

The poor bastards had no idea how deep the shit was they were standing in.

which crime were they convicted of again?

The ones the police determined. Don't you remember, the police determine fault, file charges they go to court and get their punishment.

Frankly I'm sick by this. Paying college tuition for my kid, I will only pay more now, thanks to a bunch of ass clown protesters and a few cops that thought they were entitled....

wtf? those idiots shoulda got kicked out of school and fined.. not get payed. this world really is going to hell haha. :nchantr

Battle-hardened squads of officers? WTF video game are you living in?

You're almost right though..
The poor bastards had no idea how deep the shit was they were sitting in. But thanks to our nation of non-responsibility, they'll never know... AND they'll go on to lead us with those delusions fully in tact.

Protest all you want! Get arrested for your cause! (seriously, how bad is a trespass charge? You think they'll get 30-to life?) That is your right as a citizen!

But for representatives of a LARGE mob, to encircle law officers and demand concessions??? :thumbdown

I get what you're trying to prove. So as a fellow armchair-hindsight 20/20-not-a-LEO-that-was-at-the-scene...what should have the police done instead to leave with the arrested students? Just have all of the LEOs and arrested students step over the sitting students, hope for the best and just take down anyone that decides to free one of the arrested students?

Yes, because sometimes, being an LEO requires actual work, and taking risks. Not trying to reduce every possible risk to yourself at the expense of the public. Expecially seeing how they're, um, public servants?

So because they're public servants you're saying that their life means less than anyone else's because they chose to become a police officer?

Damn those pesky idealists!! Shame on them for being young and thinking they could make a change for the better! We old folks know it will never work! Those naive Punks!! Battons! Peper Spray! Fire hoses at the ready!!! We Got trespassers here!!!

When the protesters surrounded police and refused to let them leave until arrestees were released, they created a hostage situation. Why the regents settled this is beyond me. They don't deserve a campus police force.

There may be a couple of severely over-dramatized nouns in that sentence. The question is unanswerable unless it's hypothetical. At no point was anyone even remotely held against their will and those cops could have gone anywhere they wanted to at any time. Believing that they're truly stuck there is a simply side effect of disliking the protesters. It's a hypocritical conundrum; if you think they were hostages, then you are an even bigger moron than the protesters you despise for being morons.

My apologies, I didn't know the area was off limits. Was it posted? Or, was it an area that is whimsically alternated between off limits and legal access? This is basic parenting 101; you don't pay attention to whining children, you ignore that behavior instead of reinforce it.

What a crock of bile.

The only crock is believing that one party in particular is completely to blame.

It would have been fun to dress you in a police uniform and watch you try to leave the area that day.

yeah thats not how it works lol

I wonder how many of them were actually UC STUDENTS at the time.

I love the armchairs in here that have never stood on line before. Next time I'll just ask them nicely and use a foam baton and fuzzy handcuffs

That's bullshit :mad

You should always challenge them to a dance-off :x

If one of the students that was sitting down had gotten hostile I could see the pepper spray as justified because hostility spreads quickly in a mob. The police should have made a hole. Stand up a couple of the students in the circle and cuff them, then walk through the hole. If they resist, or get hostile then you have my blessing to spray them. Peoe who are sitting on the ground and not posing a threa do not deserve to be pepper sprayed.

:thumbup

You can't just stand someone up that is sitting down arms locked and doesn't want to move. You have no leverage standing above them especially from the front and not enough room to get more than two officers in there. Not to mention the hostility it would create from people screaming 'HES NOT DOING ANYTHING' and shoving an iPhone in your face. Even if you could there are dozens of people standing in the background to take his place before you could even put cuffs on and now you're in the same place you started, except the mob is more irritated and you have one more arrestee to deal with
