So the bike has been sitting dormant for the passed few years in the garage on a non-op. And its finally time to bring it out again!!! Got the insurance done, and called dmv to register. Apparently if you choose to register your vehicle early you get fines (pro rated by how early you choose to remove the non-op). So it was going to cost me over $800 to get the bike registered today!!!! If i wait until June when my renewal is up, its just the normal fee.
So i guess my question is. Is there a way around this? Anyone else experience something similar?
Pretty bummed until June rolls around.
Just keep watching moto vlogs living vicariously through others.......

That does not make sense.. When you re register a non-op vehicle, you should only be charged for the current year registration (if reg anniversary is within 3 months next year also).

If they are charging you $800 there is something else going on like a record of it being operated while on Non-OP. For example tickets, tolls or parking tickets.

Or the person you talked to at DMV gave you the wrong info.

See what this says: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/wasapp/FeeCalculatorWeb/renewalForm.do

Firstly, there are no penalties or fines. It is just registration fees.
When you take off non op you will pay the current years reg and then the next years reg. (if it is close to renewal time)

Eg. If your vehicle is on non op and the reg is due on 6/10/xx every year.
If you do nothing, it is still on non-op and you do not need to pay anything.

If you want to register the vehicle again.
If you register it on 6/09/17 (the day before it is due) then you will pay the reg back to 6/10/16 AND you will pay the current year (6/10/17 to 6/09/18) so in effect you will pay for 2 years registration.

If you pay the reg (take it off non-op) on 6/11/17 (not sure about 6/10) then you ONLY pay the current year.

For use in any partial year, you pay for the FULL years fees. You can't just pay for 1 months reg in the current year and then the next year...it doesn't work that way.

This ^^^

I'm constantly putting bikes on and off of non-op and have never had anything like that happen. Just show proof of insurance and pay the current year's reg fee... walk out with new sticker.

Yeah, you should only have to pay the registration for 2016 (the full amount for the current registration year) to get it registered for the road. Then 2 months before your registration is due, you can register it for next year.

Given the option of paying $800 or waiting 3 months, I'd wait.

Thanks everyone.
This is pretty much what i thought. The lady i spoke with over the phone took my vehicle and insurance info. Still gave me the same outcome. She had the usual dmv attitude of sounding like she didnt give a shit. Hopefully she was only mistaken.
I'll try back again tomorrow and hope i get someone different.
Thanks again for all the info.

What you can do at this point is enter your VIN into the DMVs online fee calculator. It should tell you all outstanding registration fees, penalties, and anything else that is due in an itemized list. If the vehicle is still on non-opp it will show up (as only the current year due). If anything else is due it should be listed.

I would hit up a private registration service. You pay a $25 fee for the transaction, but you avoid all the dealing with the DMV bs. Vacaville is a bit far from you, but I have one there I've used. There seem to be more and more of them lately, often tied to smog shops since you have to do that as part of registration.

Thanks for the link. I entered my vin and it shows i owe $111.00. This is about what i figured i would owe.

I'll have to look into a private company around here. I had no idea they existed. Not dealing with the dmv is always the way to go!

AAA does registration and in state titles transfers as well. No charge for members.

I just pulled a bike off non-op. It was dormant for 9 years or so, in this case, it was a title transfer and a gift so no used tax and the fees were 111.00
In my case, the online DMV calculator was showing over 700. In fees, but at AAA the correct lower figure came up.
Yes, go in again and take the print out of the online thing in if you are sure you entered the correct info.
