Reporting Drunk Drivers

It always amazes me when we get a report of a possible DUI driver, and right as soon as we get into position, the follower stops following, turns off, goes home, or something like that. If people can take the time to call in a possible DUI driver, but not help us actually catch them. Can't be bothered I guess.

Talk to your dispatchers dude. Every time I've called in something I'm witnessing- they go out of their way to tell me to not follow, to pull over, to turn off. I fookin argue with them, but they always go on and on and on about it.

yes, it is our fault that we dont have the resources to be everywhere at once. :laughing

trust me, i would love to have more officers on shift and have more people working in the communications centers. but that would cost more money and the public doesnt want that......

I disagree. I think a lot of the public is fine with more LEO's. What we aren't fine with is the bazillion fucking social programs and pet projects and bullshit spending.

They have to. If they tell someone to follow, and they get hurt, the department gets sued.

When we call back and people tell us, "Oh, I took my exit because I didnt want to go out of my way...." I just want to scream.

Ok- got it. From now on, "I'm in pursuit baby- Rel done deputized my ass- send the cavalry!" How was that?

It's funny.... everyone questions: "Where are the cops when I need them?" but they don't want cops around all the time. They want them around ONLY when they are wanted.

People don't like being on hold with dispatch for long periods of time, then get funds, more funds, dedicated to 911. For the bay area, all 911 calls, cell phone calls, go to the Golden Gate Communications Center (CHP). That's a lot of 911 calls. Add to the fact that there are people who call 911 for all sorts of reasons... for example: directions, complaints, weather conditions, crack calls, false reports of accidents, and so on.

If it's that important to you to call, then have a little patience.

If people want change, effect change. Anyone can sit back and complain.

Made a lot of good points. I didn't realize I could actually request to stay on the phone with dispatch until an officer locates the vehicle, I'll keep it in mind next time. People actually call 911 for directions and weather conditions??? Idiots....

I'm so in. :teeth

Funny. I also get calls nearly every day of 23109 motorcycles on Bear Creek, or 24.

oh trust me, we dont mind if you ignore those !!!!

:)

secondly... it should be noted that 23109 is the ONLY citation code i know.... wonder why hahaha

thirdly...and just for kicks....

ever get any cager heros trying to follow the speeding sportbikes on 24??? best of luck to 'em :rofl
:cool

edit: and for the record, i know its not the officers fault that you guys dont have enough resources, its a sucky situation. one of the primary reasons i didnt become a LEO was because of the whole "everyone wants you there NOW, but otherwise they dont want you around at all", again sucky situation.

The one time we called in a DUI we were in our 37 foot motorhome, pulling a car, and were on the line with the 911 people on 101S from the Tennant Rd entrance in Morgan Hill until we got to the 152E exit in Gilroy. The only reason we broke off contact with the DUI was because he turned into the Gilroy Crossing parking lot and I didn't want to try taking my motorhome into the lot after him. I would have thought that a CHP cruiser might have been dispatched from the truck scales on the freeway, or even the yard at the 101/152 interchange, but the 911 operator kept saying they were trying to get someone into position.

We felt bad that we had to break off contact, and told the dispatcher why, and they understood - if I was in my car I probably would have followed the idiot until one of us ran out of gas...

And that is perfectly understandable....

What I don't like is when people call it in, and then take the next exit so they could go wherever.....

For sure, doesn't an officer's directions trump a dispatchers?

i dunno, if im in the area where a possible DUI call comes out, the first thing ill ask the dispatcher is if the caller is still on the line and if not, ill have him/her try to call the reporting party back. ive also called reporting parties on my cell phone before because the dispatcher was super busy.

Bumping 'cause I hadn't seen the thread before. I've called in DUIs many times from the car and followed from the freeway onto city streets until we passed a LEO and I could stop the bike. A couple of times in the car I've followed the driver out of my way and stayed on the phone or took a call back from the responding LEO.

One time I went a long way -- about 10 miles, from NB 17 to SB 85 -- in the wrong direction for me. After a few miles and knowing the LEO was on his way I started to get pretty uncomfortable following the driver; I was beginning to worry about retaliation in some form and was nebulously concerned about the LEO feeling like I could be 'going overboard' somehow.

Now I am glad to know that you guys really do appreciate the safe following / identification.

Report drunk drivers - call 911

it's a very valid program and we do want motorists to help us in our efforts to curb impaired driving:thumbup

My sister and cousin reported a DUI once.. Soo bad that the gentleman actually ran off into the shoulder numerous times on a rural road. The dispatcher had them follow the gentleman all the way back to his house.. They parked down the street and waited for for officer to show up.

Officer showed up and knocked on the door / made the arrest based on my sister and cousin's ID of the driver.. Probably helped that he parked half way on his lawn. Lol.

Just as a hypothetical situation, my hands free dies and I would really like to report an extremely drunk driver.

I intend to follow the driver as I make my call till a CHP arrives.
Can I still be cited for using a cell phone without a hands free device?
