My 3.5 mini aussie is limping. It actually started over a week ago after he tried to jump on top of one of those tunnels they're supposed to go through. I figured a sprain, gave it a couple days of no activity and went out to play our normal soccer. No signs, he was hauling ass and chasing the ball. Then after a all of a sudden he started hobbling and holding his right paw up. We went home, I laid off all activity for a week. This saturday we hiked Last Trampas for over 2 hours, no signs and a few times he all out sprinted for squirrels and was jumping up and stuff. Today we go to play soccer and 5 min in he starts the limping again. I checked the paw, massaged the foot. He was good to go another 5 then started limping again. I went home after that and throughly checked his paw, putting pressure on areas and no signs. I'm not a vet obviously but just looking for signs.

After reading online I guess it could be signs of lyme disease??? :wtf

Bishop Ranch vet in San Ramon is gnarly expensive. I have no clue what the cost would be just for a check but I'm guessing in the $200 range as thats what it cost when he got into rat poison last may.

Any vets in the area I should check out? Do the symptoms I mentioned sound familiar to anyone? I'm hoping its a sprain.

Front or rear limb lameness?

My vet in Pinole is $50 a visit, but you'll probably be tacking xrays on top of that. Good luck.

Skyline Vet in Oakland is the best Vet I have ever met. Dr. Braun is straight up and will tell you exactly what is going on. He doesn't overcharge.

The initial check for out cat was $50 at Ace in Fremont. It is on Mowrey, kind of far for you but they are open 7 days till midnight.

I don't think lyme is very likely, more likely a sprain of some sort. Along with the strict rest you would probably benefit from giving him some NSAIDs, to reduce inflammation. You may need to do this for a longer period of time than you would like to!!

If it were in the rear limb I would have told you that your pup probably had a partial tear in the cranial cruciate ligament...yay for you!

Icing is good, NSAIDs are good (by prescription from your vet), rest is good. Do it. If the doc isolates pain in the elbow, you may be looking at something more expensive to fix. I dunno about pricing but I like Dr Marmalejo at Chabot Vet Clinic...if it is beyond his purview he will refer to someone with more expertise.

AND, if spending $200 or more is a problem for you please, please, please get pet insurance! Veterinary medicine is becoming more and more advanced, due in part to owners who demand the best care for their pets. If this were a cruciate ligament tear, you are looking at *at least* $4000 in fees for surgery, and that is not with the best in the field.

Take a look at Trupanion and Healthy Paws, NOT VPI, por favor. Good luck with your doggie and feel free to PM me with any questions. I may know one or two things about orthopedic doggie business.

Consider this a virtual slap for having a dog but not having a vet in place already. Seriously-how have you been taking care of your dog? Regular checkups?

I do my yearly shots at pet food express, clip tonails myself and trying to get better at brushing their teeth. That's about it. These are my first dogs if that helps.

You need a regular vet, same as you do a regular doctor.

They are little fuzzy people. Also it's a good habit to have a small account somewhere with cash for dog vet emergencies, so you never have to pick between rover and eating.

Gonna look into Pet Insurance. Did an online quote for Embrace Coverage. Be around $65 a month for bot my dogs and may cover some vaccinations. Seems high but I'm not totally sure.

Try Trupanion. I can't recall if we have had positive or negative experiences with Embrace/can't recall their insurance model. I know it seems expensive as another monthly expense BUT if you took on doggies as pets, you also need to expect that there could be significant veterinary expenses to go along with it. Do you have thousands of dollars set aside for emergency care? No? Then get insurance.

As a personal anecdote, my kitteh, Sophie was diagnosed with bladder cancer last year. What a shitty day. She was at Pet Emergency and Specialty Center of Marin (PESCM), in good hands, they were able to roll her in to surgery after visualizing the mass on ultrasound. I did not have to think about whether or not I could afford to say "yes" to a $4000 surgery, and all of the aftercare that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Trupanion was great, no hassle. **Note**Just like any insurance, hey WILL look for pre-exisitng conditions.

As an aside, STOP doing yearly vaccine shots. They are not neccessary. Once every three years is fine, and a lot of evidence shows they last 5-10 years. The vaccines are necessary but hard on the system. You have to do the rabies by law, but educate yourself on the other ones. We are getting a new puppy in a couple weeks, and all vaccines are going to be given separately and with a week in-between.

Long, but lots of good information: Skip to the 18:30 mark for the vaccine information, but the whole talk is how to raise a long lived healthy dog.

Thanks for that! I new yearly shots were crap. I hate how some places, like the A's game, want records of shots not more than a year out. I'll double check the fine print but I think that was the case.

My rednose pitbull is 13 years old,i've had him since he was 9 weeks old.I only go to the vet once a year for a checkup,Only problem hes had was a lump on his rear leg it was cancer so cost be almost 4k to have it fixed,i dont have pet insurance..Vet says he super healthly for a 13 year old dog,i clip my dogs nails, brush there teeth and whatever they need,i feed my dogs dry food with a cut up hotdog and a egg..And i give chocalate now and then,,i know people are going to get on my ass about that, never done him any harm in the time i've had him,and my English bull terrier is 3 on the same diet as the pitbull and the once a year vet checkup. Its 50 bucks for a visit at my vet.i get their shots at pet food express.

Usually you can submit a letter from your regular vet explaining a longer interval between shots.

Do you want cheap, or good? They're the best around.

Pet insurance is very different from medical insurance we're used to.

I'll never pay for that shit again. Complete ripoff
