A suspected motorcycle thief eluded capture Monday night after ditching the bike in Greenbrae and running into a nearby mobile home park, police said.
The chase began shortly before 9 p.m., when the stolen motorcycle's owner, who was driving on southbound Highway 101 in Marin, happened to see a similar Harley-Davidson traveling on northbound Highway 101, said Sgt. Ken Roberts of the California Highway Patrol. The owner called police, suspecting that he had just passed his Harley, which was stolen on April 19 in San Francisco.
The CHP approached the motorcyclist and confirmed from the license plate that it was the stolen Harley. Police pulled the motorcyclist off the freeway at Lucky Drive, but as they were about to contact the suspect, he fired up the Harley and took off, Roberts said.
The motorcyclist went about 200 yards up the Redwood Highway frontage road, abandoned the Harley and ran east into the mobile home park near the Greenbrae Boardwalk. The CHP and Twin Cities police searched the neighborhood with a helicopter but were unable to find the motorcyclist.
A resident found a white helmet, likely the motorcyclist's, left at the scene, Roberts said.
