Riding the speed limit on the highway?

Just because you didn't crash doesn't mean it's safe to split cars at 60+MPH.

Riding a moto in any fashion isn't safe. The simple reality of moto's and cars sharing the same road along with all sorts of potential yet unforseeable dangers means that there is NO SAFE WAY to ride a moto. NONE. You choose your way for yourself....that way the feels best to you. Kinda like life...huh?

I ride about 10 MPH over the posted limit. Check the 9's for LEO. If traffic is slow I quit splitting lanes at 45. Now I'm more careful. Got my points down from 4 to 2 now. Once one more comes off I can get back to my canyon shenanigans.

I'm usually the "maniac" too. :laughing

this is how i read the OP:

I am always reading advice about how riding in the left lane is the safest way on the highway. Ride slightly faster than the flow, ect. This kinda bugs me because I never feel all that comfortable trying to maintain 75-85+ mph on my 30 hp bike. Even in my cage I usually stay around the speed limit.

*at this point i was like, um ok so buy a more powerful bike duh... so i checked his basic info on the left*

I used to stick in the right lane at close to the speed limit when I commuted from Treasure Island to Oakland. I figured out due to the traffic at that time of day it took me about 2 more minutes going the speed limit vs taking it up to the ragged edge.

I agree with many of the others before that I felt the most comfortable in the left lane, or the 2nd from the left lane flowing with the speed of traffic and usually just a little faster.

This way, like stated before, you only have cars approaching from the right, the shoulder is a good escape route if required (but be careful, it is usually covered in gravel so watch the braking). Also, by going a little faster you can continue to move out of drivers blind spot, and that is probably the most important part.

Just always assume that no driver will see you, and in the left lane, you are minimizing the cars that you have to pay attention to.

Eric

I've been doing 80 mph on 280 in the fast lane, I spot a car in my mirror, merge right to let the vehicle pass, yeah it was a cop. he passed, no biggie. chp doesnt give speeding tickets unless it appears to be excessive or dangerous.

I got a speeding ticket 70mph on 680 right by Walnut Creek. I also got a 75mph speeding ticket on 680 in San Ramon.

Both on my cage. The worst part was I was in the 2nd lane from the right and I was getting passed by people to the left of me. WTF?

Your cage does not look good in the eyes of the good citizen Police Officer? You have a dirty, rusty cage, not registered, lights broken? I don't know, I'm just wondering.

F = MA
so if you're in the fastlane, your injuries would theoretically be worse than if you were going slower in the other lanes.
when there's no traffic, i ride in all the lanes to keep max distance between me and other cars on the road.
ie: if there's a car in #1 lane, I'll be passing in #3

The speed limit is as posted on the signs beside the road, except in the case the ticketing officer does not like your face, in which case the speed limit is zero.

I took traffic school once, before they had online traffic schools. and one of the guy there got a speeding ticket for 3mph over the posted speed limit.
Honestly, some LEO have nothing else better to do.
