Salt water reef tanks.

I'm loving my tank. I have a pair of clowns, a yellow tang and a blue chromis. A torch coral, hammer coral, rainbow Monti, Idaho grape Monti and stylo.

I haven't checked back in a while. I have my tank up and running. Got my live rock cycled and have my fish in it. So far I have 1 hippo tang, 1 sailfin tang, 1 Naso tang, 3 cardinals, and two emerald crabs. My nitrates are at 40 PPM and I'm changing water to bring that to about 10 so I can get more cleaner invertebrates. Then the corals can be put in. I'll post pictures tomorrow.

Had a minor tank crash. Sump light caught fire and fell in the sump. All of my sps died and I lost a torch coral frag. No clue what actually killed them but everything is doing fine now with some new frags. Found thousands of pods on my glass a few days ago, I now have a happy mandarin goby!

Recent fts.

Recently fell in love with the 40 gallon breeder by Aqueon. I hope Petco still has the $1 per gallon tank sale.

Nice looking tank, can't wait to get some corals growing in mine soon.

200 Lbs of Fiji rock, two Kessil 150 LED pendulum lights and T-5. Two more Kessil lights are on order.

Anyway I still have lots to do but I'm enjoying the experience so far. I had two black and white clownfish but one ended up having a virus so I took them back and got two snowflake clowns.

So does that mean you will be salt water only then? I was hesitant but kept my freshwater tank and turned it into a quarantine tank.

I haven't heard about this "sale" I'll have to look into it. I want to buy a 30 gallon or so corner tank to use as a quarantine tank.

Don't count on them stocking that.

I currently have a 10 gal, 28 gal and 65 gal freshwater tanks, a 75 gallon reef tank and a 60gal tank full of live rock.

I'm upgrading my RODI to a faster system that is portable since I'm now maintaining my in laws tank too. Selling my 5 stage filter for $60. All filter's are 2 months old and comes with a storage tank and faucet.

I haven't checked this thread for a while. I had a reef meltdown a while back. My anenome got caught in the overflow. I was getting ready for work and noticed the tank was super cloudy. Wife called halfway through the day and said something smelt bad. Got home and there was 1/2 and anenome stuck in the overflow and the rest turned to goo and poisoned the tank. Pretty much everything dead in 24 hrs. I still have my 135g discus tank. I'm thinking of setting up a seahorse tank but, thats how it always starts lol.

What is everyone using to filter their tank? specifically I am trying to lower my nitrates. I am constantly testing at about 20PPM and they will not go down regardless of how much I change. I am changing about 35-40 gallons of saltwater a week. I have a protein skimmer but think I may need another or something else to supplement.

Where are you getting your water? Have you tested it to make sure it doesn't have nitrates?

For diluting levels, bigger water changes at once are much better than several small water changes.

I have an overflow on my tank. Drains into a sump with my skimmer, then a compartment that has live sand, live rock, macro algae and some critters, then into the return compartment with live rock gravel and my return pump. I run a filter sock intermittently (so most of my pods can get through the whole system) and carbon most of the time.

I have a five stage RO/DI filter and I'm getting 0PPM total dissolved solids from the TDS meter. I will take your advice and change out 50% of my water Tuesday. I just bought another 40 gallon container to mix fresh salt water. So next time I'll do 90 gallons of water changed. Where are you running your carbon for filtration? in the filter socks? I may need to use the filter socks to clean up the water more than my protein skimmer does. I am hesitant to use carbon because of the possibility of my fish getting Marine Head and Lateral Line erosion. I'll do a Water change first and a filter sock and see how things go in the next couple weeks. Thanks.

Don't put it in the filter sock. The carbon will smash itself into dust, clog the filter and turn your tank water black.... Don't ask how I know.

I don't have media reactors yet but that's the best way. I have my carbon in a mesh bag and have it in my sump.

I'm upgrading to a 120gal system this weekend and need to get this out fast.

$250 for everything.

The tank is an aqueon reef ready tank, left corner overflow, drilled on bottom with overflow (durso pipe, very quite) and return line. It's 48"x18"x21". There is one scratch that can be seen when full of water but can be fixed once it's drained. All seals look good and no leaks.

Stand is custom built out of 2x4s and plywood with tongue & groove pine boards outside. I planned on staining them but didn't get around to it. The stand is 50"x20"x32"so there is lots of height inside.

Sump is a 29 gallon tank with siliconed glass partitions. The first chamber is where I currently have my drain, heater and skimmer, second chamber has a refugium and the third chamber has return pump.

Skimmer is a Red Sea Berlin rated for 250 gallons but needs a pump.

Return pump is a mag 7 and works flawlessly.

*does not include livestock, lights, rock or sand*
I do have extra live rock (Fiji and tonga) for sale at $1.50/lb (that's half of the cheapest local rate and the same rate I can trade in for store credit). For $100 I will include a Coralife 4 bulb t5 fixture (4 months on bulbs, 2 actinic, 1 purple and 1 10,000k).

I am more than happy to help you load everything but i can't unload. You are welcome to come look at the tank before it's shut down (shut down starts tomorrow, 9/20).
