Not sure if this is the right place to post but is anybody running SC3's at the track?

Would be nice to get more laps on tires but would like to know how people like these tires?

I was running one on the rear in November. Only doing track days with it. I liked it but it was late in the season and cooler temperatures out there. Probably better results in the summer months

im curious. how many laps are u getting out of the other compounds right now? and on what bike?

I didn't use the SC3 until November. I was being a cheap fuck. I haven't been counting laps but I was using the SC1 front and SC2 rear and getting a good three track days out of them. I wasn't using tire warmers (lazy, I know) but just bought a new set last month for this season. my next pair will be an SC2 front and rear for thunderhill
Using them on my beemer :burnout

I ran SC2 a couple times in 2018, also during the cooler temps. that was on 2007 R1, and I too seemed to be getting about 3 track days. I could probably flip the tire and get a little more as T-hill I seem to wear left side a lot better but I also seem to have a little more cold tear on the right side. I also was using a low budget warmer and have chicken hawks coming in the mail. I was seeing temps of about 150* with current warmers, i know the CH warmers list 175* but I wont know these numbers are correct for a few more weeks...

Ill be on the 13 ZX10R now. aftermarket everything. SO tire wear will probably change some. Back up bike will be the 05 GSXR1000 aftermarket everything as well.

I did see a Youtube video of a rider using SC3 and he stated they didnt work well under high heat. But I didnt see any specific numbers for what he thought that heat might be.

what pressures are you running? Warmers aren't going to affect whether or not you're getting cold tear, they just affect how long it takes to get your tire up to operating temp.

Good question. I cant remember off the top of my head but i ran the recommended numbers for that day with Pirelli and I confirmed it with a couple of A riders next to me at track. I also was working with Dave Moss setting suspension and came in after 1st session and 5th session. 5th session on is my 100% sessions, the first 4 are build up at least when the weather is cooler. Dave said the cold tear was normal for the track and temps of that day... the R1 is on stock suspension, maybe that has something to do with it? Dave said its not unusual so I took his word for it. I wouldnt say the cold tear was really bad but it was there...

I know the pressures were like 25/31 or something close to that...

I have pics on my phone but I havent figured out how to post them.

if your tire warmers arent getting up to temp, u cant use everyone else's pressures. every 10degF is ~1psi that ud need to adjust. so if your warmers are 20F too low, ud need to go down 2psi compared to everyone else.

running too high because your warmers are cold would contribute to tearing.

I ran a couple last year and I'm putting another one on now, I'm only getting 3 track days to, but I'm also a fat pig on a liter bike and a heavy throttle hand, to me they stick as good as SC2 and are only $185 each for a 200/60-17 which is alot cheaper that the SC2, I don't race just do alot of track days :thumbup

you only get 3 track days on SC3?

Good to know! I should have both sets of warmers next track day and I can find out what i actually got going on.

What is an ideal tire temp off warmers?

Depends on the tire; the operating temperature varies both with compound and tire brand. Ideally you want the tire to be at operating temperature off warmers.

For example, the fast stock1000 rider on MotoAmerica extra soft Dunlop likes 38psi front at 190F and 20psi rear at 200F. The slow AFM rider on Pirelli sc2 likes 33psi front at 200F and 24psi rear at 200F.

General rule of thumb is the tire should be hot enough that it’s painful to hold your hand on the tire for more than a couple seconds.

no way was I running tires that hot....My Chicken hawks came in tonight. im gonna grab thermo image gun and put them against my other warmers.

pretty sure chicken hawks said 170* was their hot temp? and I thought my cheap temp gun was reading 150* at the track. But that gun is $30 so could be wrong. I have a nice $500 FLIR at my shop.

I didnt realize numbers where so important. I just knew I needed tire warmers.

Just a quick test to see the differences between the two....About a 5" strip on the cheaper warmers that dont get very hot. I didnt catch that using the temp gun. Thermos gives a much better few...

Looks like those new warmers are the ticket :thumbup

I like my tires like I like my coffee... black and 200F :laughing

I doubt my tires are 200F off the warmers, but Pirelli website recommends 176F for an hour before use

The Current SC3 is an odd duck. (2017 is the latest I have seen) It's supposed to be a hard, but it's just as soft as an SC2 and wears fast ( IMHO). The only plus is that they are cheap. They spin up easier than an SC2 as well. Typically, in the past, the SC3 has been much "harder".

As to weather, The SC3 is the cold weather tire for rears, then the SC2, then the SC1. The lower numbers work well in the heat, not so well in the cold. I will start out the season on an SC3. For the fronts, it is the opposite. Pirellis are not like Dunlops. The SC1 and SC2 are the only tires I run on the front.

The warmers shut off once they reach temp.

SO the questions begs to be asked, at what temp do they kick back on? or is a time delay? You most likely CANT maintain 170* plus temp for more than 15 mintues without the shut down....

Ask Pirelli how they recommend us to do that, I would imagine they have this stuff down to a science and a solution or product that can make that happen...

Thanks for that...Thats pretty valuable information I wasnt aware of...

Can you expand on the difference between Pirellis and Dunlaps? I have always ran SC2 and SC1 but the bike i just bought has Dunlaps on it and came with a couple of 1 day left tires. I would also like to know in case Dunlap is the only tire I have a choice of running and what i might experience differently...

Warmers never heat the tire to ideal operating temperature, which is generally well over 200F.

Baking a tire at 200F, say between sessions at a trackday, is probably wasteful.
