So how hard is the class to get a basic cert?

Extremely easy. 2 Pool Dives, 2 Open Water Dives, and some online E-learning. Usually only costs about $250-300 for the classes and certification.

Cool, I'm looking at some schools right now.

Just one more expensive hobby to get into :teeth

Few clips of some diving here in Indo. (Note* I couldn't post most of my vids, because I never carried a torch for my GoPro which rendered everything green/paleish). Anyone recommend a good torch for videos that's not uber expensive?

This thread makes me want to dive. Any beginner friendly and interesting areas near by?
Other barfers interested?

I was certified with PADI in '02 but can't find my card. Does anybody know how to get a replacement?

I'm thinking maybe I should just retake the course since it's been a while, what's a good dive shop near sunnyvale?

Monterey - Breakwater and The Barge are awesome dives.

Here's how you can re-order your cert card:

You can take a refresher course at Diver Dan's in Sunnyvale ;)

I've got a few more videos coming out, and I might be quoted in next months Scuba Diver Magazine! w00t.

I'll check out Diver Dan's, and thanks for the site. It turns out that I took my training in Aug 2003. Amazing how much personal info is out there on the net.

before i take up ANOTHER expensive hobby and look into getting certified...how much would i be looking to spend on all the gear and everything i need?

$250 - Open Water Course

and you could probably get away with spending about $1200 for gear if you get good 2nd hand equipment. (I'd recommend doing about 15 dives before you buy your gear so you can gauge what you like).

If you go on guided dives with a local shop, you're usually looking at $50/dive.

Glad to see this thread on BARF. I love diving also but I wouldn't do it here in Norcal again. It's just too damn cold. I've been to the Philippines a few times to dive and its freaking beautiful over there.

If you live in the Peninsula, check out Scuba Fusion in San Mateo. That's where I got certified. It was one of the cheapest ones around I believe.

Anyone start their Open Water Dive Course yet?

Any good dive photos or vids lately?

I'm still finishing my Instructor course (taking my time) and I'm reallllly keen to sign up for a Tec 40 course, but I'm not very stoked about the 20*C water here. I think Bali/Thailand ruined it for me lol.

I tried to see if anyone on my FB page wanted to take classes with me. no takers :(

been researching on places and classes. looking to sign up in the next week or so and actually take the class in April-June.

Do it in Hawaii in end of July and I'll accompany you. :teeth

I hate the freezing water in NorCal. I don't care what everyone says "If you can dive norcal you can dive anywhere."

I got my open water cert at Salt Point. http://www.californiadiving.com/north/northcal.html

Good luck! :thumbup

If I could afford to go to Hawaii I'd say count me in! Trust me when I say I'm not thrilled about diving in Monterey. But I did go into the water in October for cage diving by the Farallon Islands. Cant get much colder then that!

I wanna get certified so i can LEAVE CA and go to warmer waters :p

enjoy your trip!

The place I got my cert has closed unfortunately. But I didn't find Monterey bay too horrible. Just make sure you use gloves and booties. The gloves, compass, and mask were the only things not included in the package price for my school. Fortunately, I borrowed some nice gloves, and that made a nice difference. (had my suit zipper open up, and could tell very quickly what a difference the covering was making!)

And for better or worse... a nice cup of hot chocolate before and after my dives! :teeth
