Serious mechanical breakdown you've experienced?

My ’05 ZX-10R with a bad crank bearing is in the shop. The crank needs to be replaced, maybe a rod, and a bunch of other stuff.

Got an update from the shop after they opened the motor - it wasn't a bad crank bearing, but a dropped valve (actually one intake and one exhaust in the same port) in number 4 cylinder. They make the same type of noise (as bad crank bearing), I was told. The cylinder head and the piston need to be replaced.

Come to think of it... Only one. My cr85 froze up solid coming down the back straight at Hollister hills ATV track. I slowly came to a stop and pushed it off the side. Got the truck and brought it home. I had XRs only work the engine and I was good to go.

I suppose I'm pretty lucky.

A crank bearing gave in at 54k on my 02 Monster. Replaced the entire motor with a 03 for 300 + labor.

Don't even bother fixing and start looking for a new motor.

Any idea how this happened? cam chain jumped? over rev?

This. Bad day.

10 miles outside Tonopah, Nevada. Rode into town (yes, with the hole). :(

Running 90 mph across the desert for extended periods of time. ;) The FJ1200's were known for getting hot, a bit of oil starvation to that cylinder and 3 inch hole.

Came out okay though, swapped it!

Bummer dewd, I dun rolled up 96,000 trouble free mi. on my '89 FJ1200. Last I heard it had 108,000K and wuz still run'in strong! :banana
Only "break down" I had was a rear tire blow out, but even that wuz my own damn fault fer ride'in with a bald tire, pass'in on a dy then cut'in it at 'bout 85 mph. :teeth

i was on the freeway and a con rod shoved its head through my case :|

pull over to the shoulder and it was all good... still yet to ride since then :|

Destroyed the starter motor. Other than that all other "breakdowns" were minor and my fault/ignorance.

Since getting the FZ6, ZERO issues after 5000 miles.

Some photos showing the damage. I'll worry about the "whys" later. :(

10" Long bolt size of a ball point pen laying on the road that jammed through my rear tire then punched through the rim.

Those final drive belts that are supposed to be indestructible. Wrong Ive broken 2 of em. First time I dpn't know why it broke. Second time I definitely broke it. Both times were on lonely twisty roads at night.

1992: RGV-250

On the way to work on Bear Creek road. Flogging the little bastard up the hill when cylinder 2 seizes. A bit of handlebar acrobatics saved the day. And the fact that I have seized 50cc strokes some many times in my youth that I always ride with 2 fingers on the clutch lever. Naturally, spare parts in the garage: new cylinder, new piston, new rings (from the race kitted RGV) - weekend project, back on the road. Gotta love 2-strokes :)

1994: CBR-900RR - New, ~2000 miles

Riding northbound on Hwy 17 when, at about 60mph the engine seizes. Whoa - what fun. Pays to ride with the left hand on the clutch lever (see above). Towed it a dealer and the found that two oil galley paths in the engine block were blocked by shavings which caused the cams to weld themselves to their respective bearings. Fixed under warranty.
