Seriously horrible geisha feet...

I'm sure you're right... very much a different era... but I just have issues with thihgs being done to infants/children that are not in their best interest, and will impact the rest of their lives... :(

you gonna call CPS on the parents of that 90 y/o woman?

Connie, what might be correct/right from our point of view might not be from others. I was having a very interesting discussion with one of my friends on this just the other day. Back home in India when I was growing up; my dad would beat me on little things. Many, here would consider it to be child abuse but I turned out alright and still give him all the respect he deserves.

We now laugh about those days when he would try to catch a hold of me to give me a beating and I would try to run to my granddad's room.

Our prospective of things might not always be right from others point of view and vice-versa.

Just my:2cents

looks painful. well, foot binding might not be in anymore, but i do remember getting told quite often when i was a kid that no one would ever want to marry me because of my big feet. my grandmother/mom and all the female relatives used to harp on me about my feet (among other things) at every family gathering, it was really embarrassing and they always made you feel like shit. over something you can't really control.. well, unless you do what that lady did x__x in the end i grew up to have pretty regular sized feet. my sister, however, has larger feet and is horribly self-conscious because of it. as in, she freaks out and thinks that she can only shop in the michael jordan section of the men's shoe store because she wears size 9s. standards for beauty are just plain whack.

seriously though. how many ladies try to buy the 37 instead of the 37.5? or try to get the smaller shirt/pant size because they don't want to be labeled as an XL? you might think this is ew, but we've got botox, plastic surgery, laser surgery, teeth bleaching, skin resurfacing, and a load of other very unnatural (and sometimes quite painful) procedures that are meant to "beautify". i mean.. how is this any different from a boob job, nose job, or facelift?

oh well..

See, I don't see that as a "cultural" thing... I see it as poor parenting (not to be disrespectful to your father!). People today still think beating a child is an acceptable form of discipline. Some of the cowboys I know still "over n under" horses to train them... spurs, sacking out, etc etc etc. A better trainer, who turns out better horses, uses a gentler approach.
Perhaps you turned out "all right" in spite of your father's parenting, not because of it. Just an opinion! :)

The difference is that one is an adult, who is making an informed decision to have elective surgery performed, the other is an infant. No informed consent, no chance to decide if the end result is worth the price that's paid.
In theory, the procedures you mention leave you more attractive without "maiming" you or leaving you crippled or incapacitated, etc. etc. etc.

Yeah... like circumcision dammit!

My guess is that her bound feet were a visible symbol of status, allowing her to distinguish herself from lower classes who had to actually walk because they had to work. This might have allowed her to marry into a better family with some wealth and in fact lead her to have an easier life than she would have if she'd left her feet to grow normally. Maybe...

I'm just pullin' all of this outta my butt--which has been allowed to develop 100% naturally. :laughing

Uh... OK... turtlenecks FTW??

Hell fucking yeah. Male circumcision is just as barbaric and unreasonable a practice as the female version is. Anyone that tries to bullshit on the point of cleanliness has never had a penor.

(of their own :twofinger)

howd ya like to suck on those toes? :barf

Lots of men fetishized them, actually:

"Men who loved the bound feet were often referred as the "lotus lovers." They were aroused by the mysterious covered feet and were thrilled to see it without the cotton cloth. According to Levy, the bound feet aroused the men's five senses:

The eye rejoiced in the tiny footstep and in the undulating motion of the buttocks which it caused; the ear thrilled to the whispered walk, while the nose inhaled a fragrant aroma from the perfumed sole and delighted in smelling the bared flesh at closer range. The ways of grasping the foot in one's palms were both profuse and varied; ascending the heights of ecstasy, the lover transferred the foot from palm to mouth. (Lotus 34)

Chinese men would eat the watermelon seeds or almonds placed between women's toes. Drinking from a cup inside the lotus shoes and/or even drinking straight out of the shoe itself, were other common practices. Besides these strange habits, some of the men also drank the water that the bound feet were washed in. The men treasured the bound feet like a precious piece of gold." -Footbinding: A Painful Tradition.

gahh blech no. I guess I'm just too vanilla!! :laughing

... that shit is a whole other story!

grammar points for not saying, 'a whole nother.' :thumbup

maybe i'm just another ignorant, ugly american, but i've never seen this subject as a cultural difference and therefore acceptable. not because i can't tolerate it or the culture that produced it, but because throwing away the ability to walk without pain is beyond counterintuitive. and to force this upon female children is, in the very least, horrifically selfish. denying a woman the option of 'flight' is, in my opinion, inhumane, thoughtless, and cruel.

Then don't mention anything about your mother. :|
And FYI- it's NOT a "completely different thing"... it's simply a matter of degree. She "bound" your feet with shoes that were too tight for the purpose of keeping your feet small.

+1

Again Connie I was kidding jeez

grammar points for not saying, 'a whole nother.' :thumbup

Hahaha thanks :blush

BTW I didnt know nother was a word

Never had your toes sucked on or the parts between your toes licked? It's quite sensual, almost tickles and makes uh... other parts of your body tingle. Wash well and try it with the boyfriend sometime. ;) :thumbup

Cultural differences can only excuse so much.

General Sir Charles James Napier said:
You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.
