SF Parking Meter Dilemma

my tickets happened to me at moto parking spots with 10 hour parking limits. i paid close to the full 10 hours each time and got the ticket in the middle of the day.

each time i looked at the little window that the meter maids look through and it shows that my spot was paid for.

now i park half a mile away from work so i dont have to park on this blind meter maid's route

I went ahead and put "broken card reader" signs on the meters, hopefully DPT will get off their asses and fix 'em.

I also noticed this on the bike next to me. The dude just bought the bike a couple weeks back. Reminder to keep those DMV papers stuck to the windscreen until you get your plate:

Did the ticket have the VIN#? Why should he paid that ticket? They can't track him down?

I parked there at 2nd and Market this morning, and saw that someone has posted printed signs on the defective meters saying the card readers do not work. Thank you. That saved me parking and reparking until I found one that worked.

Happy it helped, I got frustrated moving my bike to another meter yesterday and then having to use quarters.

I covered up the meter ID numbers so hopefully it'll get DPT to get their asses out of the golf carts and call in the broken meters.

Prompted by this thread, I discovered something amazing last night: Kaplan Lane. Not saying anything... but it rhymes with "Tree Barking". :D

I was thinking the same but with duct tape, writing BROKEN METER + DATE

I'd then take a picture of said meter for your defense that you will arguably have to provide. As Entoptic suggested, the meter maids won't likely even want to get out of their golf cart, but may call in a fix at that point.

I was talking more about cheating the system. When you pay for a spot the little orange hexagon switches to a black mark and when you are out of time it switches back to bright orange but if you put black tape over the marker than the meter person can't tell unless they get out and inspect the meter.

I believe (sure somebody here knows the CVC for it) that the spot between the corner and the marked spaces is available for motorcycles. Motos can also share any marked space so long as they fit within the lines, and the space is paid for. Both vehicles (or whichever one is left) are subject to a ticket if the meter runs out.

We're still subject to the usual rules about driveways, curb markings, stop signs, hydrants, etc.

Do not do this! I found out the hard way with an 80.00 ticket. SF has a law that states one vehicle to a parking stall.

ok so - what if there are no marked spots, as is often the case in SF? e.g. just meters and no lines of demarcation between spot #1, spot #2? how can you really tell which spot you're sharing? or do you just have to make sure BOTH are paid or otherwise take an edge spot.

It depends on the direction of your front tire. I know it sounds crazy but this is directly from the meter maid. If you turn your tire to the left then you are in the left stall and if it is to the right then you are in the right stall.

wow that is just plain NUTS. i will take your word for it though. i would think an ideal spot for not getting tipped or smashed is the one at the right before the corner, parked in FRONT of the last car (as opposed to in between two cars). you'd back in, with your wheel turned to the left, towards the front bumper of that car. but per your other comment is that not ok since you can't park between the corner and the first spot?

Holy crap, everything I thought I knew was wrong. The CVC does not appear to address parking spaces beyond saying that it's up to local ordinance.

In SF, you can park at broken meters for the posted limit! I thought a broken meter meant you'd be ticketed for parking there.

And looking at the city ordinance, in fact, a parking space *is* defined as: "A space demarcated by painted lines or other indicators for the Parking of a single vehicle."

Live and learn!

for the past few weeks two of the four meters have been busted and no longer work with parking cards. It seems that one of them has had gum shoved up the card slot, and the other just refuses to read any card. Coins work.

Is that really a dilemma or a straight proof of vandalism ? But, as the second post mentions, you can just stick more gum into the coin slot and then have SF City replace the meter at the cost of $2000 and then tax you and your employer for it.. maybe forget to fill a pothole along the way, citing a $2000 deficit..
.. yeah.

We're gonna pay one way or the other; might as well have fun destroying the meters.. we're paying for em!!! HA! Bubble gum is for pussies.. thermite FTW!

actually i believe that a broken meter is not grounds for free parking, you're supposed to find another spot if i recall correctly. anyway, others have mentioned, I would definitely find a way to pay or get there early to find a spot. i know there's more card readers closer to mission and beale, if you don't mind the walk. EDIT: a few on fremont at mission as well, that i always walk by when going to work.

as a side note, can someone tell me what the policy is when street parking in non-moto specific spots in SF? e.g., a normal coin-metered street. i obviously see a lotta ppl park at the curb close to street corners (not in red, as i know that's grounds for ticket regardless), or even in between cars. are you required to ensure that the 'spot' that you're 'sharing' is paid? and if so, how can you really say which meter you're covered by? i HATE tickets but also want to be free to park where i can. thanks and sorry for threadjack!

This. SF requires you to pay meters. If it is broken you can be legally ticketed, no matter if you take pictures, etc.

The link in post #30 says that you can park at broken meters for the posted time.

"Broken Meters

If a meter is broken you are allowed to park at that meter for the posted time limit.

To report broken meters call : 415.920.4090."

Looks like SF sucks. :(

At least in SF the mayor doesn't have to send out letters to local merchants telling them how to survive the expected riots and looting if a certain trial currently in progress doesn't result in the desired verdict. :laughing
