So I just read the story about the protesters hanging posters on the GGB (sfgate.com). I hear that Wed. is going to be pretty nuts when the torch comes through.

How do you feel about the protests?

Does it contrast with your feelings regarding the protests a month or so ago

Oh and let me be the first one to say, I'm all for kicking some orange jumpsuit wearing monk in the nuts for blocking Market Street.

I saw on ESPN that the protests in Paris were so bad that they actually had to put out the torches 3 times. I thought that the whole purpose of the torch relay was to keep the flame going the entire time. Doesn't putting the torch out totally defeat the purpose?

I'm less concerned with Tibet than I am with the fact that 3 dudes with a briefcase (which, this time, happened to be full of the big FREE TIBET banner) were able to get onto the Golden Gate Bridge and then climb up it without any sort of police intervention.

I'm a little miffed that I won't be in the city on Wed. Meetings in the East Bay that day.

i think SF is competing with Berkeley in protests....

:loser

I really can't be made to care about Tibet at all.

You could if they blocked you on your way to work. I see that resulting in a shoot>>>double legged takedown, followed by some fists and elbows.
:rofl

I feel for all those who will have to slog through the masses of protestors. Someone with a Hummer 2 should go all Tiananmin Square on them.

I'm sympathetic to the calls to not support China in light of their horrible record on human rights.

And yes, some of these protests (not todays) have made me think on it a little more.

thats funny cause after sending in my stuff i got my free tibet this morning, you might have to call customer service to see what the hold up is:twofinger

Damn. I'll give it a little while longer, but if I don't receive my free Tibet soon I'm going to write somebody a very strongly worded letter to let them know how I feel.

^reminds me of a clip from Family Guy

I thought about this after the last protest thread we had, and here's how I feel.

Rosa Parks/MLK/Civil Rights - protesting an evil social/legal construct that oppressed, subjected to terror, abused and subjugated black Americans and was a blemish on American society. Protesters did break some laws and inconvenience other citizens, but the law breaking was for the most part peaceful, and it's purpose wasn't to harass others, it was to cure a huge injustice in America. Also, the correlation between action and the injustice was high.

SF war protesters - nearly none of the above applies, so neither does my support for action beyond the bounds of the law. The civil rights protesters could not effectively protest the unjust laws they faced without breaking them. You don't need to break laws and harass other people to protest against Bechtel or Halliburton. Especially in SF where most people agree with you.

Tibet - San Francisco has a significant Chinese population that is directly effected by China's human rights abuses and they are presented with a rare opportunity to protest China directly, but from the safety of US shores. If you read about the crackdowns China is doing against political dissidents right now, it's pretty horrible stuff. Protesting the torch, and protesting China's purchase of the Olympic games is IMO, highly appropriate. And when you take into consideration the fact that there are very few ways to effectively, legally, and safely protest China, I will not be angry if I'm inconvenienced this coming Wednesday.
