Shadow banning

What is anfo used for other than bombs?

Whoops, I thought ANFO was the fertilizer product not used to make bombs, since it's sold as a product. Didn;t realize it was already explosive.

Note: not a terrorist

This entire forum is actually a shadow-banning of all of you. There's, like, three, real humans posting right now, and everything else is an algorithm of responses. The "real" BARF is a totally cool place that you don't get to play in. :devil :later

OMG I'm really just a bot designed to post random Sailor Moon comments in to motorcycle threads, but I thought I was a real person.

I don't know what to feel but it doesn't matter cus I don't really feel cus I'm just a bot.

Ammonium nitrate is the product used to make bombs, typically fuel oil is used as an additive in making bombs

Tannerite (a brand of explosive targets) is mostly ammonium nitrate, with aluminum powder used as fuel

instant cold packs also use ammonium nitrate (and water)

Absolutely agree. I just think users should know how sever punishments can be up front. Many reasonable people never would think something like a shadow ban is even a thing. They should be informed I think.

It's a tool to be used against extreme cases where conventional moderation, suspension, or banning hasn't worked. This would be a chronic troll who has probably been banned and created (probably numerous) duplicate accounts to continue trolling.

Being that part of the success of a shadow ban relies on deceit and secrecy, it would be counterproductive to advertise to members that it is a tool that can be used. The whole point is to make the troll believe he is successfully trolling, without actually negatively effecting the online community. If used correctly, anyone receiving this deserves it, and the community benefits from their absence.

Like many tools, it can be used for good, or bad if misused. But ultimately we are talking about privately run online forums where freedom of speech does not apply.

Im not following you here. Do you think the state should have a secret death penalty? A firm punishment is supposed to act as a deterrent. Potental serial trolls may not bother with a community in the first place if they know they could be shadow banned. The point of a deterrent is to make the cost of bad behavior too high to be worth the bother. Kind of the entire idea behind punishment isnt it?

The right to free speech and censorship are two often misunderstood terms and concepts.

Forums are owned by people. It is their house and you as the participant are just guests in that house.

If you visit my home, you have no free speech rights nor many others, like the right to carry a gun. Its my house so my rules. Once you leave my property, by all means, say anything you want and strap on whatever you will but only after stepping onto public property. While I wouldn't ever restrict discussion and so on, go past common courtesy and start in on my family and your shadow will follow you right out the door and into the street.

The government can engage in censorship, private entities do not. You do not have free speech rights on private property.

If you demand free speech on a forum then by all means, buy one and say whatever you want. And when it comes to guns, I might have one on my property but that doesn't mean you have the same right.

It is all about ownership. There will always be those who can't or won't grasp the concept of what private property is but forums are just that. If you don't like their rules, go elsewhere or try to effect change but in the end, the forum owner sets the rights and that is just the way it is.

Will bad policies by forum owners cause damage to the forum? Perhaps but then again, that isn't anyone else's business either.

I'd say it's not a punishment. It's a tool to deal with those people in situations where the conventional tools and punishments haven't worked. The less people realize it's a "thing", the more effective the tool becomes. The people that would be subject to this aren't the type who would be deterred from trolling if they knew they could be shadow banned. They would test the system and, when in doubt, just find a way to create another dupe account, etc.
