SHANGHAI (AP) -- Shanghai authorities ordered schoolchildren indoors and halted all construction Friday as China's financial hub suffered one of its worst bouts of air pollution, bringing visibility down to a few dozen meters, delaying flights and obscuring the city's spectacular skyline.

The financial district was shrouded in a yellow haze, and noticeably fewer people walked the city's streets. Vehicle traffic also was thinner, as authorities pulled 30 percent of government vehicles from the roads. They also banned fireworks and public sporting events.

"I feel like I'm living in clouds of smog," said Zheng Qiaoyun, a local resident who kept her 6-month-old son at home. "I have a headache, I'm coughing, and it's hard to breathe on my way to my office."

Shanghai's concentration of tiny, harmful PM 2.5 particles reached 602.5 micrograms per cubic meter Friday afternoon, an extremely hazardous level that was the highest since the city began recording such data last December. That compares with the World Health Organization's safety guideline of 25 micrograms.

602.5 vs a guideline of 25. shit thats gross.

what could even be done to fix that... ban vehicles, fuel powered equipment, and any form of hydrocarbon-burning power plant from the city??

I've been to Shanghai and would never, ever go back there...even if you paid me. :thumbdown

Saw that this morning.

While I agree that sometimes air/soil/water pollution regs can be ridiculous, I use China as Exhibit A as to why I prefer to have them in place.

Some years ago, a friend took a job in Tianjin, China. Before she left she checked to see what Lost Planet had to say about it. Basically, it said that one should only go there if they like smog and other pollution. She - a marathon runner - almost cried after reading that...

I would spend a fortune on gas mask filters if I lived there.

Yeah - but I think they'd clog rather quickly. Might be best to go straight to an airline respirator. True it'd be tiring to wear and you'd have to drag around a cart with big ol' air cylinders on it, but at least you'd be breathing clean air.

China is about the cash. Domination of manufacturing and continuing to be some the Imperial power of the world. It has to be total shit for them to stop the engine.

They suck more shit as global destroyers than even the US. We suck, but have started to address our suckage.

For my GG grand kids I am happy to say FU China. F fucking U.

It's already total shit and they're gonna keep it going until people start dropping dead (and then only stop reluctantly). People in China don't have the same representation we do. Gubmint is giving them all the finger (and we make it happen).

How do we make it happen.?? By buying our IPads and.... :jaded

With the level of pollution in its rivers and air some in China's government may see it as a solution to their over population problem.

If they are only now starting to monitor it, how bad before they seriously address it.

It will get a lot worse before it gets better.

I actually think china is going to falter under the weight of its exponetial expansion. they got too big, too fast. they didnt have the cultural maturing required for the level of consumption and capitalism they have. they are destorying their own country, and a whole lot of eastern africa as well.

china's total disregard for its citizenry, and that citizenry's total disregard for their country, is the main reason i think india will actually surpass china in the next 100 years as a world power.

My fear is that China would not accept that Kev. And then step out with their military power to maintain their world status. That would fuck us all. I won't be around for that, but our kids or grandkids will be.

If not sooner. Its unfortunate that a culture with such an advanced history could go down the toilet so fast.

Mexico will become our factory floor. It is already happening in the electrical industry.

still, no one adressed my inital post in this thread. if any of you, even cared, you would not buy anything made in china.

oh but corpse, you say thats impossible, and you would be right, because most of what you buy, touch, play with etc. was made in china. so if you look at china and see the polution, you have to look at yourself.

there is a way to change that. but he apathetic populous of you, me, and everyone else, will not change anything. that is, unless everyone of us is DIRECTLY exposed to the same thing that these people are exposed to.

because we are all NIMBYists.

not in my back yard!!! but i'll glady pay the cheapest price for xyz.

these are the consequeces we reap from the rewards of saving 0.05 cents.
