So long story short I need a new caliper for my 98 muz 660.

Best part is, they don't make the parts anymore and there are no direct fitment from other bikes.

So now I need to source a new caliper that will fit (I think I have some in mind) and will need the mounting hardware made up.

Anyone know a shop that can do this for me and around how much it will cost?

I know I've seen Busy Little Shop do custom stuff like that before

A big :thumbup on Larry's work.

My caliper mount. Let me shows you it:

I can also recommend KC @ BRG Racing up in Concord (http://brgracing.com). Does lots of fabrication work for bikes. I think he charges ~$125 for his custom "superlite" rear brake hanger for SV's to give you an idea of his pricing.

He's done a lot of work for me and has always treated me well.

Now that thur is purty.

How much ye' pay for somethin' like that?

Honestly, I don't know. Larry also made me a beautiful front axle, and fit a set of rims to the bike at the same time. As I recall, he was charging $70 an hour, but that was 4 years ago.

It's not as simple as taking any caliper and making an adapter to bolt it on. The space between the caliper and the spokes is tight so you need to make sure the inside of the caliper is going to clear. Most sportbike calipers will not fit.

A small manufacturer like MZ probably used off the shelf parts for forks and brakes rather than having something made to their spec. If you can find out what they used, there might be premade parts available so you don't have to go custom.

Also a barf sponsor. :thumbup

I don't know his fab work, but enjoyed the time up there when my bike was on the dyno.

Fabbing the part is one thing. Designing the part is an entirely different thing and will most likely be where most of the money is spent.

Yep. I'm aware of this, I've been doing a lot of research on what will fit.

The muz ha polini forks I believe, and there's been a lot of discussion over the years regarding the front brake (its a Grimeca unit) and the unanimous decision on the boards is that they are shit and need to be replaced.

The only problem is this almost always meands having a proper relocation mount made up.

Contact the forums and see if anyone has drawings for a mount. If properly and accurately done, it could save you a lot of money and time.

KC designs parts for bikes too. Most of it is small run/full custom one-offs. Won't say he's "really cheap", but I've always found his prices reasonable. Worth calling.

BANKE PERFORMANCE in Santa Cruz can make you a perfect piece.

Call them..

I think BLS still does a ton of milling by hand. One of those truly skilled guys who is still a genuine machinist, rather than relying on a PC to do the grunt work. He has made some absolutely awesome stuff. Search for threads he has created, and you should be able to find some examples.

Yes Larry does everything by hand and is a superb craftsman he works out of his garage and lives in Antelope, CA "Sacramento"
