What are your thoughts on short cuff gloves vs gauntlet style gloves? Has anyone gone down in either of these that can say whether one is much more effective than the other? I love wearing short cuff gloves in the summer along w/ a mesh jacket and just wanted to make sure I'm not risking a large amount of injury to my hands / wrists for a slight comfort.

I went down a few weeks ago wearing my one piece leathers and gauntlet leather gloves. Could have been a lot uglier if I wasn't wearing all my gear and leather instead of textile.

I prefer gauntlets, I also went down last year, I cannot say what the difference would have been, But I also do not have to worry about bugs or bees going up my sleeves.

Gauntlets, all the time, even when I am wearing shorts and flip flops.

I really like gauntlets but sometimes the sortys are convenient for the city runs and stuff.

Make sure your cuffs are just not going to ride up your arm in a "sliding home" type accident before you opt for shorties.

If the cuffs of your protective jacket are nice and tight enough that they can't slide up your arm, shorties are fine for the vast majority of foreseeable accidents.

I've "tested" the shorty gloves. Buy good ones....i have dainese 4 stroke. I'm really reluctant to buy any others bc they've proven themselves a few times..i do want to try out the racer gloves Mickey model. Those look solid.

shorties for Dirt, Gauntlets for street.

Gauntlets for winter or cold. Shorties for summer in the valley.

But Ponch got more chicks...

And if I go down, hope I'm wearing gauntlets. I got used to them and felt a bit light with the shorts.

I still have a pair of the shorty Icon titanium knuckles. I've never crashed with them but that weak Velcro strap thats suppose to keep them in place isn't very reassuring.

gauntlet on the street - shorties may cover you fine when you're riding but when you're flying through the air - all bets or off on what it will cover - gauntlets up the chances you'll have overlapping protection

Gloves protect your hands. Gauntlets protect your wrists. So the question is really, "Do you want to protect your wrists?"

I wear shorty gloves pretty often. Yes, I want to protect my wrists but I have other reasons for liking the gloves. It's a balance. I always wear a proper jacket, helmet, and boots, but I often wear plain old jeans on my short jaunt to work. Risky? Absolutely, but if dealing with proper pants means I'll just say screw it and drive to work then I'm ok with making that concession. Sometimes I'm a lazy bastard. Sometimes I'm going straight to a meeting and simply taking off my jacket is a lot easier than dealing with proper pants.

The fact is that you've already compromised your safety by riding in the first place. The trick is to protect yourself in the best way possible while still continuing to ride. And from this perspective, gauntlets are the clear choice.

But I guess I subscribe to AGATT-light. I'm a sucker for convenience. If wearing jeans, or more comfortable gloves once in a while means I'll ride 10% more miles this year then yeah I'll do it. I'd guess that most of us don't ride as much as we want to, and we've all said "Screw it, I'll just drive." more times than we'd like to admit.

Thank you, these are very helpful responses. I checked my jackets and realized I haven't been tightening the wrists enough. I tugged on the jacket and it exposed my forearms.

I understand when I should wear gauntlets and when I can get away w/ short cuffed gloves. My A* jacket pretty much requires gauntlets no matter what since they'll likely ride up in a slide, but my S&S jackets can be tightened around the wrists to a point where they won't expose a gap between the jacket and gloves.

I should probably check the waist adjustment of my jackets as well. I realize I've been wearing my gear for comfort rather than safety. I'll tighten everything up from here on out. Thank you for all your help.

I really don't like gauntlets in the rain. Even on a Street Triple rain runs down my arms so gloves are wet inside and out and take forever to dry.
