LOL How many dialects of North American English do most people speak?

Put a Mexican, a Puerto Rican and a Spaniard in a room and they have trouble communicating.

Put a French Canadian, a Cajun and a Frenchmen in a room and you have the same thing...and a slapping contest :teeth

If you can't speak Pequot, GTFO! :x Goddamn furriners! :twofinger

Bitching about it isn't going to change anything. I highly doubt this country will backtrack to the old days when our ancestors (well some of us) came here and were basically forced to learn English, so there's nothing bitching about it is going to do to fix the problem.

It is ironic though that in order to obtain a license in Mexico, you'd better learn Spanish because they damn sure aren't going to make any concessions for you.

no

this land was populated by native people who did not speak English long before it became the United States.

We should all be speaking Hokan

This country was founded by WASPS who spoke English. That's why it became the commonly spoke language just like it is today.

I am less concerned about language skills than driving skills. If everybody drove better, there would be no need to communicate with anybody.

just a question...

does that mean none of us can drive in foreign countries if you can't speak their language? I mean I've driven in Japan, and various parts of europe...

except for the US, international road signs are pretty much identical...

You don't need to know English to drive, you just need to know a few key words (stop, speed limit, caution, etc) and you need to understand the colors (green = go, red = stop, yellow = caution), which are more or less the same everywhere in the world, and the shapes and symbols which can vary country to country but are generally pretty intuitive.

As such, there should be no requirement to speak english to take the driving exam.

+1 all street signs are color coded and in different shapes FOR A REASON.

I know it sucks they don't speakadaenglish but that does not mean they can't drive any worse than most americans.

Yes, how else are you gonna understand road signs, the legal print on all forms, communicate medical info in case of an accident, ...

If you live in the US, learn English or GTFO! I am an immigrant and came here for the culture, not to push for exceptions because I'm too lazy to learn.

you are taking a driver test to see if you can drive, not read legal forms or give information in english.

Its clear to most people the driving test/qualification part of DMV is broken. As riders we see and feel the effects more than other drivers. People that have english as a second language seem to get the spotlight when things go wrong, but I knew plenty of english speaking native born that had no insurance or correct licensing growing up.

The tests need to be more comprehensive with real understanding of road conditions and driving skills exhibited as a start. Hope this happens in my lifetime.

I still think we should adopt some of Germanys or Finlands license requirements, where you have to pay to take training and perform a real driving test instead of being able to walk in answer 20 questions, take a picture and you're legal to drive...

same with britans motorcycle requirements, start on a 125 or something with less than 30hp for year with learner plates before you can move up... but that wouldn't fly either...

watch from minute 1 onward...

if you can't speak english how will you read the road signs, or listen to instructions from a LEO?

to drive on our roads, yes, i believe you should have to speak english.

lol speaking mexican was a joke... geeze. notice how i said spanish earlier in my post.:rolleyes

:thumbdown to all you who took it seriously.

It's a tough call.

When this country was founded, countless honorable and great people spoke no English in this country. They contributed just as much to this country as "English" speakers.

I believe that you HAVE to have at least a rudimentary ability to READ english (street signs). But for conversational language, I don't think it should be required for a DL.
